بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ الم

Alif. Lam. Meem.

اللَّهُ لا إِلـٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ الحَيُّ القَيّومُ

God—there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.

نَزَّلَ عَلَيكَ الكِتابَ بِالحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِما بَينَ يَدَيهِ وَأَنزَلَ التَّوراةَ وَالإِنجيلَ

He revealed to you the Book with truth, confirming what preceded it. He also revealed the Torah and the Gospel.

مِن قَبلُ هُدًى لِلنّاسِ وَأَنزَلَ الفُرقانَ ۗ إِنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا بِآياتِ اللَّهِ لَهُم عَذابٌ شَديدٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزيزٌ ذُو انتِقامٍ

Aforetime, as guidance for humanity. And He revealed the Criterion. Those who deny God’s revelations will face harsh punishment. God is Mighty, the Avenger.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَخفىٰ عَلَيهِ شَيءٌ فِي الأَرضِ وَلا فِي السَّماءِ

Nothing on earth or in the heavens is hidden from God.

هُوَ الَّذي يُصَوِّرُكُم فِي الأَرحامِ كَيفَ يَشاءُ ۚ لا إِلـٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ العَزيزُ الحَكيمُ

It is He who shapes you in the wombs as He wills. There is no deity but He, the Almighty, the Wise.

هُوَ الَّذي أَنزَلَ عَلَيكَ الكِتابَ مِنهُ آياتٌ مُحكَماتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الكِتابِ وَأُخَرُ مُتَشابِهاتٌ ۖ فَأَمَّا الَّذينَ في قُلوبِهِم زَيغٌ فَيَتَّبِعونَ ما تَشابَهَ مِنهُ ابتِغاءَ الفِتنَةِ وَابتِغاءَ تَأويلِهِ ۗ وَما يَعلَمُ تَأويلَهُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ۗ وَالرّاسِخونَ فِي العِلمِ يَقولونَ آمَنّا بِهِ كُلٌّ مِن عِندِ رَبِّنا ۗ وَما يَذَّكَّرُ إِلّا أُولُو الأَلبابِ

It is He who revealed to you the Scripture. Some of its verses are definitive—they are the foundation of the Book—while others are allegorical. Those with deviant hearts pursue the allegorical, seeking discord and seeking its interpretation. However, none knows its interpretation except God and those firmly grounded in knowledge say, “We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.” Only those endowed with understanding take heed.

رَبَّنا لا تُزِغ قُلوبَنا بَعدَ إِذ هَدَيتَنا وَهَب لَنا مِن لَدُنكَ رَحمَةً ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الوَهّابُ

“Our Lord, don’t let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Grant us mercy from Yourself; You are the Giver.”

رَبَّنا إِنَّكَ جامِعُ النّاسِ لِيَومٍ لا رَيبَ فيهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُخلِفُ الميعادَ

“Our Lord, You will gather humankind on a Day that’s inevitable.” God never breaks His promise.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا لَن تُغنِيَ عَنهُم أَموالُهُم وَلا أَولادُهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيئًا ۖ وَأُولـٰئِكَ هُم وَقودُ النّارِ

As for those who disbelieve, neither their wealth nor their children will avail them against God. These are Fuel for the Fire.

كَدَأبِ آلِ فِرعَونَ وَالَّذينَ مِن قَبلِهِم ۚ كَذَّبوا بِآياتِنا فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِذُنوبِهِم ۗ وَاللَّهُ شَديدُ العِقابِ

Similar to the command of Pharaoh’s people and those before them; they denied Our revelations, so God seized them for their sins. God is severe in retribution.

قُل لِلَّذينَ كَفَروا سَتُغلَبونَ وَتُحشَرونَ إِلىٰ جَهَنَّمَ ۚ وَبِئسَ المِهادُ

Tell those who disbelieve, “You will be overcome and gathered into Hell, a wretched destination.”

قَد كانَ لَكُم آيَةٌ في فِئَتَينِ التَقَتا ۖ فِئَةٌ تُقاتِلُ في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ وَأُخرىٰ كافِرَةٌ يَرَونَهُم مِثلَيهِم رَأيَ العَينِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يُؤَيِّدُ بِنَصرِهِ مَن يَشاءُ ۗ إِنَّ في ذٰلِكَ لَعِبرَةً لِأُولِي الأَبصارِ

There was a lesson for you in the two groups that met—one fighting for God’s cause and the other of unbelievers. They saw them with their own eyes, twice their number. God supports with His aid whom He wills. In this, there is a lesson for those with insight.

زُيِّنَ لِلنّاسِ حُبُّ الشَّهَواتِ مِنَ النِّساءِ وَالبَنينَ وَالقَناطيرِ المُقَنطَرَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالفِضَّةِ وَالخَيلِ المُسَوَّمَةِ وَالأَنعامِ وَالحَرثِ ۗ ذٰلِكَ مَتاعُ الحَياةِ الدُّنيا ۖ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسنُ المَآبِ

Beautified for people is the love of desires—women, children, heaps of gold and silver, fine horses, livestock, and fertile lands. These are the pleasures of worldly life, but with God is the best return.

قُل أَؤُنَبِّئُكُم بِخَيرٍ مِن ذٰلِكُم ۚ لِلَّذينَ اتَّقَوا عِندَ رَبِّهِم جَنّاتٌ تَجري مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهارُ خالِدينَ فيها وَأَزواجٌ مُطَهَّرَةٌ وَرِضوانٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بَصيرٌ بِالعِبادِ

Say, “Shall I inform you of something better than these? For the righteous, there are Gardens with their Lord, beneath which rivers flow, where they will reside forever, with purified spouses and God’s approval.” God is Seeing of the beings.

الَّذينَ يَقولونَ رَبَّنا إِنَّنا آمَنّا فَاغفِر لَنا ذُنوبَنا وَقِنا عَذابَ النّارِ

Those who say, “Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us our sins, and protect us from the suffering of the Fire.”

الصّابِرينَ وَالصّادِقينَ وَالقانِتينَ وَالمُنفِقينَ وَالمُستَغفِرينَ بِالأَسحارِ

The patient, the truthful, the obedient, those who spend, and those who seek forgiveness at dawn.

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لا إِلـٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ وَالمَلائِكَةُ وَأُولُو العِلمِ قائِمًا بِالقِسطِ ۚ لا إِلـٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ العَزيزُ الحَكيمُ

God bears witness that there is no god except Him, and so do the angels and those endowed with knowledge. He upholds justice. There is no deity but He, the Mighty, the Wise.

إِنَّ الدّينَ عِندَ اللَّهِ الإِسلامُ ۗ وَمَا اختَلَفَ الَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ إِلّا مِن بَعدِ ما جاءَهُمُ العِلمُ بَغيًا بَينَهُم ۗ وَمَن يَكفُر بِآياتِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ سَريعُ الحِسابِ

Religion with God is Submission. Those given the Scripture only disputed after knowledge had come to them, out of jealousy. Whoever denies the signs of God—God is swift in reckoning.

فَإِن حاجّوكَ فَقُل أَسلَمتُ وَجهِيَ لِلَّهِ وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِ ۗ وَقُل لِلَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ وَالأُمِّيّينَ أَأَسلَمتُم ۚ فَإِن أَسلَموا فَقَدِ اهتَدَوا ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّوا فَإِنَّما عَلَيكَ البَلاغُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بَصيرٌ بِالعِبادِ

If they argue with you, say, “I have submitted myself to God, and so have those who follow me.” To those who were given the Scripture and the unlettered, ask, “Have you submitted?” If they submit, they are guided, but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the message. God is Observant of the beings.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ يَكفُرونَ بِآياتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقتُلونَ النَّبِيّينَ بِغَيرِ حَقٍّ وَيَقتُلونَ الَّذينَ يَأمُرونَ بِالقِسطِ مِنَ النّاسِ فَبَشِّرهُم بِعَذابٍ أَليمٍ

Give news to those who deny God’s revelations, kill the Prophets without right, and kill those who advocate for justice, of a severe punishment.

أُولـٰئِكَ الَّذينَ حَبِطَت أَعمالُهُم فِي الدُّنيا وَالآخِرَةِ وَما لَهُم مِن ناصِرينَ

Their deeds will be rendered worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.

أَلَم تَرَ إِلَى الَّذينَ أوتوا نَصيبًا مِنَ الكِتابِ يُدعَونَ إِلىٰ كِتابِ اللَّهِ لِيَحكُمَ بَينَهُم ثُمَّ يَتَوَلّىٰ فَريقٌ مِنهُم وَهُم مُعرِضونَ

Did you consider those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They were invited to the Book of God to judge between them, yet a group of them turned away in defiance.

ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُم قالوا لَن تَمَسَّنَا النّارُ إِلّا أَيّامًا مَعدوداتٍ ۖ وَغَرَّهُم في دينِهِم ما كانوا يَفتَرونَ

This is because they say, “The Fire will touch us only for a number of days.” What they used to invent deceived them in their religion.

فَكَيفَ إِذا جَمَعناهُم لِيَومٍ لا رَيبَ فيهِ وَوُفِّيَت كُلُّ نَفسٍ ما كَسَبَت وَهُم لا يُظلَمونَ

How will it be when We gather them on an inevitable Day? Every soul will be fully recompensed for what it has earned, and they won’t be treated unjustly.

قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ مالِكَ المُلكِ تُؤتِي المُلكَ مَن تَشاءُ وَتَنزِعُ المُلكَ مِمَّن تَشاءُ وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشاءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشاءُ ۖ بِيَدِكَ الخَيرُ ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ

Say, “O God, Holder of all sovereigns, You grant sovereignty to whom You will, and You strip sovereignty from whom You will. You honor whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your hand is the good; You are capable of everything.”

تولِجُ اللَّيلَ فِي النَّهارِ وَتولِجُ النَّهارَ فِي اللَّيلِ ۖ وَتُخرِجُ الحَيَّ مِنَ المَيِّتِ وَتُخرِجُ المَيِّتَ مِنَ الحَيِّ ۖ وَتَرزُقُ مَن تَشاءُ بِغَيرِ حِسابٍ

“You merge the night with the day, and the day with the night. You bring the living from the dead, and the dead from the living. And You supply whoever You will, without account.”

لا يَتَّخِذِ المُؤمِنونَ الكافِرينَ أَولِياءَ مِن دونِ المُؤمِنينَ ۖ وَمَن يَفعَل ذٰلِكَ فَلَيسَ مِنَ اللَّهِ في شَيءٍ إِلّا أَن تَتَّقوا مِنهُم تُقاةً ۗ وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللَّهُ نَفسَهُ ۗ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ المَصيرُ

Believers should not take unbelievers as protectors instead of believers. Whoever does so has nothing to do with God, unless it is to protect oneself from them out of caution. God warns you about Himself. To God is the final return.

قُل إِن تُخفوا ما في صُدورِكُم أَو تُبدوهُ يَعلَمهُ اللَّهُ ۗ وَيَعلَمُ ما فِي السَّماواتِ وَما فِي الأَرضِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ

Say, “Whether you conceal what’s in your hearts or disclose it, God knows it.” He knows everything in the heavens and on earth. God is fully capable of all things.

يَومَ تَجِدُ كُلُّ نَفسٍ ما عَمِلَت مِن خَيرٍ مُحضَرًا وَما عَمِلَت مِن سوءٍ تَوَدُّ لَو أَنَّ بَينَها وَبَينَهُ أَمَدًا بَعيدًا ۗ وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللَّهُ نَفسَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ رَءوفٌ بِالعِبادِ

On the Day when every soul will find its good deeds presented, it will wish there was a great distance between itself and its wrongdoings. God cautions you about Himself, and God is full of kindness to the servants.

قُل إِن كُنتُم تُحِبّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعوني يُحبِبكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغفِر لَكُم ذُنوبَكُم ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ

Say, “If you love God, then follow me, and God will love you and forgive your sins.” God is Forgiving and Merciful.

قُل أَطيعُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسولَ ۖ فَإِن تَوَلَّوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُحِبُّ الكافِرينَ

Say, “Obey God and the Messenger.” But if they turn away—God doesn’t love the disbelievers.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصطَفىٰ آدَمَ وَنوحًا وَآلَ إِبراهيمَ وَآلَ عِمرانَ عَلَى العالَمينَ

God chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and Imran’s family over all worlds.

ذُرِّيَّةً بَعضُها مِن بَعضٍ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَميعٌ عَليمٌ

They are offspring of one another. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

إِذ قالَتِ امرَأَتُ عِمرانَ رَبِّ إِنّي نَذَرتُ لَكَ ما في بَطني مُحَرَّرًا فَتَقَبَّل مِنّي ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّميعُ العَليمُ

When Imran’s wife said, “O my Lord, I dedicate what’s in my womb to Your service, so accept it from me. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”

فَلَمّا وَضَعَتها قالَت رَبِّ إِنّي وَضَعتُها أُنثىٰ وَاللَّهُ أَعلَمُ بِما وَضَعَت وَلَيسَ الذَّكَرُ كَالأُنثىٰ ۖ وَإِنّي سَمَّيتُها مَريَمَ وَإِنّي أُعيذُها بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَها مِنَ الشَّيطانِ الرَّجيمِ

When she delivered her, she said, “My Lord, I have delivered a female.” And God knew what she had delivered, “And the male isn’t like the female. I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan, the outcast.”

فَتَقَبَّلَها رَبُّها بِقَبولٍ حَسَنٍ وَأَنبَتَها نَباتًا حَسَنًا وَكَفَّلَها زَكَرِيّا ۖ كُلَّما دَخَلَ عَلَيها زَكَرِيَّا المِحرابَ وَجَدَ عِندَها رِزقًا ۖ قالَ يا مَريَمُ أَنّىٰ لَكِ هـٰذا ۖ قالَت هُوَ مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرزُقُ مَن يَشاءُ بِغَيرِ حِسابٍ

Her Lord graciously accepted her, made her grow in a beautiful manner, and entrusted her care to Zechariah. Whenever Zechariah visited her in the prayer chamber, he found her with provisions. He inquired, “Mary, from where did you get these?” She replied, “It is from God. God provides for whom He wills without measure.”

هُنالِكَ دَعا زَكَرِيّا رَبَّهُ ۖ قالَ رَبِّ هَب لي مِن لَدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَميعُ الدُّعاءِ

At that moment, Zechariah prayed to his Lord: “My Lord, grant me, through Your mercy, a good offspring—You are the Hearer of Prayers.”

فَنادَتهُ المَلائِكَةُ وَهُوَ قائِمٌ يُصَلّي فِي المِحرابِ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحيىٰ مُصَدِّقًا بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَسَيِّدًا وَحَصورًا وَنَبِيًّا مِنَ الصّالِحينَ

As he stood in prayer in the prayer chamber, the angels called out to him: “God gives you good news of John, confirming a Word from God, a man of honor, virtue, and a righteous prophet.”

قالَ رَبِّ أَنّىٰ يَكونُ لي غُلامٌ وَقَد بَلَغَنِيَ الكِبَرُ وَامرَأَتي عاقِرٌ ۖ قالَ كَذٰلِكَ اللَّهُ يَفعَلُ ما يَشاءُ

He asked, “My Lord, how can I have a child when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?” He said, “Thus God does whatever He wills.”

قالَ رَبِّ اجعَل لي آيَةً ۖ قالَ آيَتُكَ أَلّا تُكَلِّمَ النّاسَ ثَلاثَةَ أَيّامٍ إِلّا رَمزًا ۗ وَاذكُر رَبَّكَ كَثيرًا وَسَبِّح بِالعَشِيِّ وَالإِبكارِ

He then said, “My Lord, give me a sign.” He replied, “Your sign is that you shall not speak to anyone for three days except by signals. And remember your Lord often, and offer praises in the evening and the morning.”

وَإِذ قالَتِ المَلائِكَةُ يا مَريَمُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصطَفاكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَاصطَفاكِ عَلىٰ نِساءِ العالَمينَ

The angels announced, “O Mary, God has chosen you, purified you, and selected you above the women of the world.”

يا مَريَمُ اقنُتي لِرَبِّكِ وَاسجُدي وَاركَعي مَعَ الرّاكِعينَ

“O Mary, devote yourself to your Lord, prostrate, and bow with those who bow down.”

ذٰلِكَ مِن أَنباءِ الغَيبِ نوحيهِ إِلَيكَ ۚ وَما كُنتَ لَدَيهِم إِذ يُلقونَ أَقلامَهُم أَيُّهُم يَكفُلُ مَريَمَ وَما كُنتَ لَدَيهِم إِذ يَختَصِمونَ

This is news from the unseen, which We reveal to you. You weren’t with them when they cast their lots to determine who would be Mary’s guardian, nor were you with them when they disputed.

إِذ قالَتِ المَلائِكَةُ يا مَريَمُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنهُ اسمُهُ المَسيحُ عيسَى ابنُ مَريَمَ وَجيهًا فِي الدُّنيا وَالآخِرَةِ وَمِنَ المُقَرَّبينَ

The angels announced, “O Mary, God gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary. He will be honored in the world, the Hereafter, and one of the nearest.

وَيُكَلِّمُ النّاسَ فِي المَهدِ وَكَهلًا وَمِنَ الصّالِحينَ

He will speak to people in infancy and maturity, and will be righteous.”

قالَت رَبِّ أَنّىٰ يَكونُ لي وَلَدٌ وَلَم يَمسَسني بَشَرٌ ۖ قالَ كَذٰلِكِ اللَّهُ يَخلُقُ ما يَشاءُ ۚ إِذا قَضىٰ أَمرًا فَإِنَّما يَقولُ لَهُ كُن فَيَكونُ

She asked, “My Lord, how can I have a child, when no man has touched me?” He replied, “It will be so; God creates whatever He wills. When He decrees a thing, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”

وَيُعَلِّمُهُ الكِتابَ وَالحِكمَةَ وَالتَّوراةَ وَالإِنجيلَ

He will teach him the Scripture, wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel.

وَرَسولًا إِلىٰ بَني إِسرائيلَ أَنّي قَد جِئتُكُم بِآيَةٍ مِن رَبِّكُم ۖ أَنّي أَخلُقُ لَكُم مِنَ الطّينِ كَهَيئَةِ الطَّيرِ فَأَنفُخُ فيهِ فَيَكونُ طَيرًا بِإِذنِ اللَّهِ ۖ وَأُبرِئُ الأَكمَهَ وَالأَبرَصَ وَأُحيِي المَوتىٰ بِإِذنِ اللَّهِ ۖ وَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِما تَأكُلونَ وَما تَدَّخِرونَ في بُيوتِكُم ۚ إِنَّ في ذٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لَكُم إِن كُنتُم مُؤمِنينَ

As a messenger to the Children of Israel: “I bring you signs from your Lord. I create for you from clay the form of a bird, then I breathe into it, and by God’s permission, it becomes a bird. I heal the blind and the lepers, by God’s permission, and I revive the dead, by God’s permission. I inform you of what you eat and store in your homes. There is a sign for you in this, if you are believers.”

وَمُصَدِّقًا لِما بَينَ يَدَيَّ مِنَ التَّوراةِ وَلِأُحِلَّ لَكُم بَعضَ الَّذي حُرِّمَ عَلَيكُم ۚ وَجِئتُكُم بِآيَةٍ مِن رَبِّكُم فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطيعونِ

“And I confirm the Torah that preceded me, and I make some of what was forbidden to you lawful. I bring clear evidence from your Lord, so fear God and obey me.”

إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَبّي وَرَبُّكُم فَاعبُدوهُ ۗ هـٰذا صِراطٌ مُستَقيمٌ

“God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.”

فَلَمّا أَحَسَّ عيسىٰ مِنهُمُ الكُفرَ قالَ مَن أَنصاري إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ قالَ الحَوارِيّونَ نَحنُ أَنصارُ اللَّهِ آمَنّا بِاللَّهِ وَاشهَد بِأَنّا مُسلِمونَ

When Jesus sensed their disbelief, he asked, “Who will be my allies in God’s cause?” The disciples responded, “We are God’s allies. We have faith in God, and you can witness that we are submitters.”

رَبَّنا آمَنّا بِما أَنزَلتَ وَاتَّبَعنَا الرَّسولَ فَاكتُبنا مَعَ الشّاهِدينَ

“Our Lord, we believe in what You’ve revealed, and we follow the Messenger, so record us among the witnesses.”

وَمَكَروا وَمَكَرَ اللَّهُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ خَيرُ الماكِرينَ

They planned, and God planned. And God is the best of planners.

إِذ قالَ اللَّهُ يا عيسىٰ إِنّي مُتَوَفّيكَ وَرافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ وَمُطَهِّرُكَ مِنَ الَّذينَ كَفَروا وَجاعِلُ الَّذينَ اتَّبَعوكَ فَوقَ الَّذينَ كَفَروا إِلىٰ يَومِ القِيامَةِ ۖ ثُمَّ إِلَيَّ مَرجِعُكُم فَأَحكُمُ بَينَكُم فيما كُنتُم فيهِ تَختَلِفونَ

God said, “O Jesus, I am concluding your life, elevating you to Myself, and purifying you from those who disbelieve. I will position those who follow you above those who disbelieve, until Resurrection Day. Then, to Me is your return, and I will arbitrate among you regarding your disputes.

فَأَمَّا الَّذينَ كَفَروا فَأُعَذِّبُهُم عَذابًا شَديدًا فِي الدُّنيا وَالآخِرَةِ وَما لَهُم مِن ناصِرينَ

As for those who disbelieve, I will punish them severely in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.

وَأَمَّا الَّذينَ آمَنوا وَعَمِلُوا الصّالِحاتِ فَيُوَفّيهِم أُجورَهُم ۗ وَاللَّهُ لا يُحِبُّ الظّالِمينَ

However, for those who believe and do righteous deeds, He will reward them fully. God doesn’t love the unjust.”

ذٰلِكَ نَتلوهُ عَلَيكَ مِنَ الآياتِ وَالذِّكرِ الحَكيمِ

These are the verses that We convey to you, and the Wise Reminder.

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عيسىٰ عِندَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ ۖ خَلَقَهُ مِن تُرابٍ ثُمَّ قالَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكونُ

In the sight of God, Jesus is like Adam: He created him from soil, then He said to him, “Be!” and he was.

الحَقُّ مِن رَبِّكَ فَلا تَكُن مِنَ المُمتَرينَ

This is the truth from your Lord, so don’t be among the doubters.

فَمَن حاجَّكَ فيهِ مِن بَعدِ ما جاءَكَ مِنَ العِلمِ فَقُل تَعالَوا نَدعُ أَبناءَنا وَأَبناءَكُم وَنِساءَنا وَنِساءَكُم وَأَنفُسَنا وَأَنفُسَكُم ثُمَّ نَبتَهِل فَنَجعَل لَعنَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الكاذِبينَ

If anyone disputes with you about him, after the knowledge that has come to you, say, “Come, let us call our children and your children, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then we can make a prayer and invoke the curse of God upon the liars.”

إِنَّ هـٰذا لَهُوَ القَصَصُ الحَقُّ ۚ وَما مِن إِلـٰهٍ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَهُوَ العَزيزُ الحَكيمُ

This is the factual narrative. There is no god but God. And certainly, God is the Mighty, the Wise.

فَإِن تَوَلَّوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَليمٌ بِالمُفسِدينَ

If they turn away, then God is aware of the corrupters.

قُل يا أَهلَ الكِتابِ تَعالَوا إِلىٰ كَلِمَةٍ سَواءٍ بَينَنا وَبَينَكُم أَلّا نَعبُدَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَلا نُشرِكَ بِهِ شَيئًا وَلا يَتَّخِذَ بَعضُنا بَعضًا أَربابًا مِن دونِ اللَّهِ ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوا فَقولُوا اشهَدوا بِأَنّا مُسلِمونَ

Say, “O People of the Scripture, let us come to a common word: that we worship none but God, that we associate nothing with Him, and that we don’t take each other as lords besides God.” If they turn away, say, “Bear witness that we are submissive.”

يا أَهلَ الكِتابِ لِمَ تُحاجّونَ في إِبراهيمَ وَما أُنزِلَتِ التَّوراةُ وَالإِنجيلُ إِلّا مِن بَعدِهِ ۚ أَفَلا تَعقِلونَ

O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel weren’t revealed until after him? Don’t you reason?

ها أَنتُم هـٰؤُلاءِ حاجَجتُم فيما لَكُم بِهِ عِلمٌ فَلِمَ تُحاجّونَ فيما لَيسَ لَكُم بِهِ عِلمٌ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَعلَمُ وَأَنتُم لا تَعلَمونَ

Here you are, arguing about things you know of, but why do you argue about things you don’t know? God knows, and you don’t know.

ما كانَ إِبراهيمُ يَهودِيًّا وَلا نَصرانِيًّا وَلـٰكِن كانَ حَنيفًا مُسلِمًا وَما كانَ مِنَ المُشرِكينَ

Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but a monotheist, a submitter, and he wasn’t of the polytheists.

إِنَّ أَولَى النّاسِ بِإِبراهيمَ لَلَّذينَ اتَّبَعوهُ وَهـٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَالَّذينَ آمَنوا ۗ وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّ المُؤمِنينَ

Those most deserving of Abraham are those who follow him, this Prophet and those who believe. God is the Ally of the believers.

وَدَّت طائِفَةٌ مِن أَهلِ الكِتابِ لَو يُضِلّونَكُم وَما يُضِلّونَ إِلّا أَنفُسَهُم وَما يَشعُرونَ

Some People of the Scripture wish to mislead you, but they only mislead themselves without realizing it.

يا أَهلَ الكِتابِ لِمَ تَكفُرونَ بِآياتِ اللَّهِ وَأَنتُم تَشهَدونَ

O People of the Scripture, why do you deny God’s verses, even while you witness them?

يا أَهلَ الكِتابِ لِمَ تَلبِسونَ الحَقَّ بِالباطِلِ وَتَكتُمونَ الحَقَّ وَأَنتُم تَعلَمونَ

O People of the Scripture, why do you mix truth with falsehood and knowingly conceal the truth?

وَقالَت طائِفَةٌ مِن أَهلِ الكِتابِ آمِنوا بِالَّذي أُنزِلَ عَلَى الَّذينَ آمَنوا وَجهَ النَّهارِ وَاكفُروا آخِرَهُ لَعَلَّهُم يَرجِعونَ

Some people of the Scripture say, “Believe in what was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day, disbelieve at the end of the day, so they may return.”

وَلا تُؤمِنوا إِلّا لِمَن تَبِعَ دينَكُم قُل إِنَّ الهُدىٰ هُدَى اللَّهِ أَن يُؤتىٰ أَحَدٌ مِثلَ ما أوتيتُم أَو يُحاجّوكُم عِندَ رَبِّكُم ۗ قُل إِنَّ الفَضلَ بِيَدِ اللَّهِ يُؤتيهِ مَن يَشاءُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ واسِعٌ عَليمٌ

Believe in no one except those who follow your religion. Say, “God’s guidance is the guidance. If anyone is given the same as you were, or argues with you before your Lord, say, ‘All blessings are in God’s hand; He grants them to whom He wills. God’s bounty is infinite, and He is All-Knowing.’”

يَختَصُّ بِرَحمَتِهِ مَن يَشاءُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذُو الفَضلِ العَظيمِ

He selects for His mercy whom He wills. And indeed, God is of great bounty.

وَمِن أَهلِ الكِتابِ مَن إِن تَأمَنهُ بِقِنطارٍ يُؤَدِّهِ إِلَيكَ وَمِنهُم مَن إِن تَأمَنهُ بِدينارٍ لا يُؤَدِّهِ إِلَيكَ إِلّا ما دُمتَ عَلَيهِ قائِمًا ۗ ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُم قالوا لَيسَ عَلَينا فِي الأُمِّيّينَ سَبيلٌ وَيَقولونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الكَذِبَ وَهُم يَعلَمونَ

Among the People of the Scripture, there are those who, if entrusted with a fortune, will return it to you. Yet, there are others who, if entrusted with a single coin, won’t return it unless you constantly stand over them. That is because they say, “We are under no obligation towards the Gentiles.” They knowingly tell lies about God.

بَلىٰ مَن أَوفىٰ بِعَهدِهِ وَاتَّقىٰ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ المُتَّقينَ

But yes, whoever fulfills his pledge and acts righteously—God loves the righteous.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ يَشتَرونَ بِعَهدِ اللَّهِ وَأَيمانِهِم ثَمَنًا قَليلًا أُولـٰئِكَ لا خَلاقَ لَهُم فِي الآخِرَةِ وَلا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَلا يَنظُرُ إِلَيهِم يَومَ القِيامَةِ وَلا يُزَكّيهِم وَلَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

Those who exchange God’s covenant and their oaths for a trivial gain will have no share in the Hereafter, and God will neither speak to them nor look at them on Resurrection Day nor purify them. A severe punishment awaits them.

وَإِنَّ مِنهُم لَفَريقًا يَلوونَ أَلسِنَتَهُم بِالكِتابِ لِتَحسَبوهُ مِنَ الكِتابِ وَما هُوَ مِنَ الكِتابِ وَيَقولونَ هُوَ مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ وَما هُوَ مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ وَيَقولونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الكَذِبَ وَهُم يَعلَمونَ

Some of them manipulate the Scripture with their tongues to make you think it’s from the Scripture when it’s not. And they say, “This is from God,” when it’s not from God. They tell a lie about God knowingly.

ما كانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَن يُؤتِيَهُ اللَّهُ الكِتابَ وَالحُكمَ وَالنُّبُوَّةَ ثُمَّ يَقولَ لِلنّاسِ كونوا عِبادًا لي مِن دونِ اللَّهِ وَلـٰكِن كونوا رَبّانِيّينَ بِما كُنتُم تُعَلِّمونَ الكِتابَ وَبِما كُنتُم تَدرُسونَ

It is not possible for a human to whom God has given the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to tell people, “Worship me apart from God.” Instead, “Be worshipers of the Lord, according to the Scripture you teach and study.”

وَلا يَأمُرَكُم أَن تَتَّخِذُوا المَلائِكَةَ وَالنَّبِيّينَ أَربابًا ۗ أَيَأمُرُكُم بِالكُفرِ بَعدَ إِذ أَنتُم مُسلِمونَ

And he would not command you to take angels and prophets as lords. Would he command you to disbelief after you’ve submitted?

وَإِذ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ ميثاقَ النَّبِيّينَ لَما آتَيتُكُم مِن كِتابٍ وَحِكمَةٍ ثُمَّ جاءَكُم رَسولٌ مُصَدِّقٌ لِما مَعَكُم لَتُؤمِنُنَّ بِهِ وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُ ۚ قالَ أَأَقرَرتُم وَأَخَذتُم عَلىٰ ذٰلِكُم إِصري ۖ قالوا أَقرَرنا ۚ قالَ فَاشهَدوا وَأَنا مَعَكُم مِنَ الشّاهِدينَ

God received a covenant from the prophets: “Having given you the Scripture and wisdom, if there comes to you a messenger confirming what you have, you must believe in him and support him.” He asked, “Do you agree and accept My covenant on these terms?” They responded, “We agree.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am also among the witnesses.”

فَمَن تَوَلّىٰ بَعدَ ذٰلِكَ فَأُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ الفاسِقونَ

Those who turn away after this are the transgressors.

أَفَغَيرَ دينِ اللَّهِ يَبغونَ وَلَهُ أَسلَمَ مَن فِي السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ طَوعًا وَكَرهًا وَإِلَيهِ يُرجَعونَ

Do they seek a religion other than that of God, when everything in the heavens and on earth has submitted to Him, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him, they will be returned?

قُل آمَنّا بِاللَّهِ وَما أُنزِلَ عَلَينا وَما أُنزِلَ عَلىٰ إِبراهيمَ وَإِسماعيلَ وَإِسحاقَ وَيَعقوبَ وَالأَسباطِ وَما أوتِيَ موسىٰ وَعيسىٰ وَالنَّبِيّونَ مِن رَبِّهِم لا نُفَرِّقُ بَينَ أَحَدٍ مِنهُم وَنَحنُ لَهُ مُسلِمونَ

Say, “We believe in God and in what was revealed to us, in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in what was given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are submissive.”

وَمَن يَبتَغِ غَيرَ الإِسلامِ دينًا فَلَن يُقبَلَ مِنهُ وَهُوَ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنَ الخاسِرينَ

Whoever seeks a religion other than Submission, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter, he will be among the losers.

كَيفَ يَهدِي اللَّهُ قَومًا كَفَروا بَعدَ إيمانِهِم وَشَهِدوا أَنَّ الرَّسولَ حَقٌّ وَجاءَهُمُ البَيِّناتُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ لا يَهدِي القَومَ الظّالِمينَ

How can God guide those who disbelieved after their faith, and after they witnessed the truth of the Messenger and clear proofs came to them? God doesn’t guide the wrongdoing people.

أُولـٰئِكَ جَزاؤُهُم أَنَّ عَلَيهِم لَعنَةَ اللَّهِ وَالمَلائِكَةِ وَالنّاسِ أَجمَعينَ

Upon such individuals rests the curse of God, the angels, and humanity.

خالِدينَ فيها لا يُخَفَّفُ عَنهُمُ العَذابُ وَلا هُم يُنظَرونَ

They will abide in it eternally; their torment won’t be alleviated, nor will they be granted any reprieve.

إِلَّا الَّذينَ تابوا مِن بَعدِ ذٰلِكَ وَأَصلَحوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ

Except for those who repent thereafter and reform. God is Forgiving and Merciful.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا بَعدَ إيمانِهِم ثُمَّ ازدادوا كُفرًا لَن تُقبَلَ تَوبَتُهُم وَأُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ الضّالّونَ

Those who disbelieve after their belief, then increase in their disbelief, their repentance won’t be accepted—these are the astray.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا وَماتوا وَهُم كُفّارٌ فَلَن يُقبَلَ مِن أَحَدِهِم مِلءُ الأَرضِ ذَهَبًا وَلَوِ افتَدىٰ بِهِ ۗ أُولـٰئِكَ لَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ وَما لَهُم مِن ناصِرينَ

Those who reject faith and die as unbelievers, even if they were to offer a ransom equivalent to the earth’s weight in gold, it wouldn’t be accepted from them. These are destined for a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.

لَن تَنالُوا البِرَّ حَتّىٰ تُنفِقوا مِمّا تُحِبّونَ ۚ وَما تُنفِقوا مِن شَيءٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِهِ عَليمٌ

You won’t attain virtue until you give from what you hold dear. Whatever you give, God is fully aware of it.

كُلُّ الطَّعامِ كانَ حِلًّا لِبَني إِسرائيلَ إِلّا ما حَرَّمَ إِسرائيلُ عَلىٰ نَفسِهِ مِن قَبلِ أَن تُنَزَّلَ التَّوراةُ ۗ قُل فَأتوا بِالتَّوراةِ فَاتلوها إِن كُنتُم صادِقينَ

All food was lawful for the Children of Israel, except what Israel had prohibited for itself before the Torah was revealed. Say, “Bring the Torah and recite it—if you are truthful.”

فَمَنِ افتَرىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ الكَذِبَ مِن بَعدِ ذٰلِكَ فَأُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ الظّالِمونَ

Those who fabricate lies about God after this are the wrongdoers.

قُل صَدَقَ اللَّهُ ۗ فَاتَّبِعوا مِلَّةَ إِبراهيمَ حَنيفًا وَما كانَ مِنَ المُشرِكينَ

Say, “God speaks the truth. So, follow the religion of Abraham, the monotheist, who was not of those who associated.”

إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنّاسِ لَلَّذي بِبَكَّةَ مُبارَكًا وَهُدًى لِلعالَمينَ

The first house established for humanity is the one at Bakkah—blessed and a guidance for all peoples.

فيهِ آياتٌ بَيِّناتٌ مَقامُ إِبراهيمَ ۖ وَمَن دَخَلَهُ كانَ آمِنًا ۗ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النّاسِ حِجُّ البَيتِ مَنِ استَطاعَ إِلَيهِ سَبيلًا ۚ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ العالَمينَ

Within it are clear signs, such as the standing place of Abraham. Whoever enters it attains tranquility. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty to God for those who can make the journey. But whoever refuses—God doesn’t need any being in the universe.

قُل يا أَهلَ الكِتابِ لِمَ تَكفُرونَ بِآياتِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ شَهيدٌ عَلىٰ ما تَعمَلونَ

Say, “O People of the Scripture, why do you deny God’s verses while God is a Witness to your actions?”

قُل يا أَهلَ الكِتابِ لِمَ تَصُدّونَ عَن سَبيلِ اللَّهِ مَن آمَنَ تَبغونَها عِوَجًا وَأَنتُم شُهَداءُ ۗ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغافِلٍ عَمّا تَعمَلونَ

Say, “O People of the Scripture, why do you deter believers from God’s path, attempting to make it seem crooked, even though you are witnesses? God is not unaware of what you do.”

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا إِن تُطيعوا فَريقًا مِنَ الَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ يَرُدّوكُم بَعدَ إيمانِكُم كافِرينَ

O you who have believed, if you obey some of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your faith, into unbelievers.

وَكَيفَ تَكفُرونَ وَأَنتُم تُتلىٰ عَلَيكُم آياتُ اللَّهِ وَفيكُم رَسولُهُ ۗ وَمَن يَعتَصِم بِاللَّهِ فَقَد هُدِيَ إِلىٰ صِراطٍ مُستَقيمٍ

How can you disbelieve, when God’s revelations are being conveyed to you, and His Messenger is among you? Whoever holds fast to God will be guided to a straight path.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقاتِهِ وَلا تَموتُنَّ إِلّا وَأَنتُم مُسلِمونَ

O you who believe, revere God with the reverence He is due, and don’t die except as Submitters.

وَاعتَصِموا بِحَبلِ اللَّهِ جَميعًا وَلا تَفَرَّقوا ۚ وَاذكُروا نِعمَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَيكُم إِذ كُنتُم أَعداءً فَأَلَّفَ بَينَ قُلوبِكُم فَأَصبَحتُم بِنِعمَتِهِ إِخوانًا وَكُنتُم عَلىٰ شَفا حُفرَةٍ مِنَ النّارِ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِنها ۗ كَذٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُم آياتِهِ لَعَلَّكُم تَهتَدونَ

Hold fast to the rope of God, all together, and don’t be divided. Remember God’s favor upon you, when you were enemies to each other, and He reconciled your hearts. By His grace, you became brethren. You were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from falling into it. Thus, God makes His revelations clear to you, so you may be guided.

وَلتَكُن مِنكُم أُمَّةٌ يَدعونَ إِلَى الخَيرِ وَيَأمُرونَ بِالمَعروفِ وَيَنهَونَ عَنِ المُنكَرِ ۚ وَأُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ المُفلِحونَ

Let there emerge from among you a community calling for goodness, promoting righteousness, and deterring evil. These are the successful ones.

وَلا تَكونوا كَالَّذينَ تَفَرَّقوا وَاختَلَفوا مِن بَعدِ ما جاءَهُمُ البَيِّناتُ ۚ وَأُولـٰئِكَ لَهُم عَذابٌ عَظيمٌ

Don’t be like those who split and disagreed after receiving clear proofs. For them is a severe punishment.

يَومَ تَبيَضُّ وُجوهٌ وَتَسوَدُّ وُجوهٌ ۚ فَأَمَّا الَّذينَ اسوَدَّت وُجوهُهُم أَكَفَرتُم بَعدَ إيمانِكُم فَذوقُوا العَذابَ بِما كُنتُم تَكفُرونَ

On the Day when some faces will brighten, and others will darken. To those whose faces have darkened: “Did you disbelieve after having faith? So taste the punishment for your disbelief.”

وَأَمَّا الَّذينَ ابيَضَّت وُجوهُهُم فَفي رَحمَةِ اللَّهِ هُم فيها خالِدونَ

Those with bright faces will be in God’s mercy, forever.

تِلكَ آياتُ اللَّهِ نَتلوها عَلَيكَ بِالحَقِّ ۗ وَمَا اللَّهُ يُريدُ ظُلمًا لِلعالَمينَ

These are God’s revelations that We convey to you in truth. And God does not desire any injustice for the worlds.

وَلِلَّهِ ما فِي السَّماواتِ وَما فِي الأَرضِ ۚ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُرجَعُ الأُمورُ

Everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to God, and all affairs are returned to Him.

كُنتُم خَيرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخرِجَت لِلنّاسِ تَأمُرونَ بِالمَعروفِ وَتَنهَونَ عَنِ المُنكَرِ وَتُؤمِنونَ بِاللَّهِ ۗ وَلَو آمَنَ أَهلُ الكِتابِ لَكانَ خَيرًا لَهُم ۚ مِنهُمُ المُؤمِنونَ وَأَكثَرُهُمُ الفاسِقونَ

You are the best community ever raised among mankind, promoting what’s good, forbidding what’s evil, and you believe in God. If the People of the Scripture had believed, it would’ve been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are sinful.

لَن يَضُرّوكُم إِلّا أَذًى ۖ وَإِن يُقاتِلوكُم يُوَلّوكُمُ الأَدبارَ ثُمَّ لا يُنصَرونَ

They won’t harm you except for some annoyance. If they fight you, they will turn their backs and flee, finding no support.

ضُرِبَت عَلَيهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ أَينَ ما ثُقِفوا إِلّا بِحَبلٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَحَبلٍ مِنَ النّاسِ وَباءوا بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَضُرِبَت عَلَيهِمُ المَسكَنَةُ ۚ ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُم كانوا يَكفُرونَ بِآياتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقتُلونَ الأَنبِياءَ بِغَيرِ حَقٍّ ۚ ذٰلِكَ بِما عَصَوا وَكانوا يَعتَدونَ

They are marked by humiliation wherever they are found, except when they are under a covenant from God and a covenant from people. They drew upon themselves God’s wrath and are marked by misery. This is because they rejected God’s revelations, unjustly killed the prophets, and persistently defied and transgressed.

لَيسوا سَواءً ۗ مِن أَهلِ الكِتابِ أُمَّةٌ قائِمَةٌ يَتلونَ آياتِ اللَّهِ آناءَ اللَّيلِ وَهُم يَسجُدونَ

Not all of them are alike. Among the People of the Scripture, an upright community recites God’s verses during the night hours, and they prostrate themselves.

يُؤمِنونَ بِاللَّهِ وَاليَومِ الآخِرِ وَيَأمُرونَ بِالمَعروفِ وَيَنهَونَ عَنِ المُنكَرِ وَيُسارِعونَ فِي الخَيراتِ وَأُولـٰئِكَ مِنَ الصّالِحينَ

They believe in God and the Last Day, advocate for what’s right, forbid what’s wrong, and hasten to perform good deeds. These are among the righteous.

وَما يَفعَلوا مِن خَيرٍ فَلَن يُكفَروهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَليمٌ بِالمُتَّقينَ

No good deed of theirs is ever rejected. God is fully aware of the virtuous.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا لَن تُغنِيَ عَنهُم أَموالُهُم وَلا أَولادُهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيئًا ۖ وَأُولـٰئِكَ أَصحابُ النّارِ ۚ هُم فيها خالِدونَ

As for the unbelievers, their wealth and children won’t avail against God. They are destined for the Fire, where they will remain forever.

مَثَلُ ما يُنفِقونَ في هـٰذِهِ الحَياةِ الدُّنيا كَمَثَلِ ريحٍ فيها صِرٌّ أَصابَت حَرثَ قَومٍ ظَلَموا أَنفُسَهُم فَأَهلَكَتهُ ۚ وَما ظَلَمَهُمُ اللَّهُ وَلـٰكِن أَنفُسَهُم يَظلِمونَ

What they spend in this life is similar to a wind that has frost and strikes the harvest of a people who wronged themselves and destroys it. God didn’t wrong them, but they wronged themselves.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا لا تَتَّخِذوا بِطانَةً مِن دونِكُم لا يَألونَكُم خَبالًا وَدّوا ما عَنِتُّم قَد بَدَتِ البَغضاءُ مِن أَفواهِهِم وَما تُخفي صُدورُهُم أَكبَرُ ۚ قَد بَيَّنّا لَكُمُ الآياتِ ۖ إِن كُنتُم تَعقِلونَ

O you who believe, don’t take as confidants those outside your ranks, as they will spare no effort to harm you. They desire your downfall. Their words show their hatred, but what their hearts conceal is far worse. We made the signs clear for you, if you would understand.

ها أَنتُم أُولاءِ تُحِبّونَهُم وَلا يُحِبّونَكُم وَتُؤمِنونَ بِالكِتابِ كُلِّهِ وَإِذا لَقوكُم قالوا آمَنّا وَإِذا خَلَوا عَضّوا عَلَيكُمُ الأَنامِلَ مِنَ الغَيظِ ۚ قُل موتوا بِغَيظِكُم ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَليمٌ بِذاتِ الصُّدورِ

Here you are, loving them, yet they don’t love you, while you believe in the entirety of the Scripture. When they encounter you, they say, “We believe.” But when they’re alone, they bite their fingertips in rage against you. Say, “Die in your rage!” God is fully aware of what’s in the hearts.

إِن تَمسَسكُم حَسَنَةٌ تَسُؤهُم وَإِن تُصِبكُم سَيِّئَةٌ يَفرَحوا بِها ۖ وَإِن تَصبِروا وَتَتَّقوا لا يَضُرُّكُم كَيدُهُم شَيئًا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِما يَعمَلونَ مُحيطٌ

If a good thing befalls you, it grieves them; but if a disaster strikes you, they rejoice. However, if you remain patient and righteous, their scheming won’t harm you at all. God encompasses all their actions.

وَإِذ غَدَوتَ مِن أَهلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ المُؤمِنينَ مَقاعِدَ لِلقِتالِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَميعٌ عَليمٌ

And when you departed from your family in the morning to position the believers at their battle posts. And God is Hearing and Knowing.

إِذ هَمَّت طائِفَتانِ مِنكُم أَن تَفشَلا وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُما ۗ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَليَتَوَكَّلِ المُؤمِنونَ

Two groups among you were about to falter, but God was their supporter. In God, the believers should place their trust.

وَلَقَد نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدرٍ وَأَنتُم أَذِلَّةٌ ۖ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُم تَشكُرونَ

God had already granted you victory at Badr when you were outnumbered. So, remember God, so you may be grateful.

إِذ تَقولُ لِلمُؤمِنينَ أَلَن يَكفِيَكُم أَن يُمِدَّكُم رَبُّكُم بِثَلاثَةِ آلافٍ مِنَ المَلائِكَةِ مُنزَلينَ

Remember when you were telling the believers, “Is it not enough that your Lord has reinforced you with three thousand angels sent down?”

بَلىٰ ۚ إِن تَصبِروا وَتَتَّقوا وَيَأتوكُم مِن فَورِهِم هـٰذا يُمدِدكُم رَبُّكُم بِخَمسَةِ آلافٍ مِنَ المَلائِكَةِ مُسَوِّمينَ

Yes, if you remain patient and mindful, and they attack you suddenly, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels, clearly marked.

وَما جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ إِلّا بُشرىٰ لَكُم وَلِتَطمَئِنَّ قُلوبُكُم بِهِ ۗ وَمَا النَّصرُ إِلّا مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ العَزيزِ الحَكيمِ

God designed this as a message of reassurance to soothe your hearts. Victory comes solely from God, the Mighty, the Wise.

لِيَقطَعَ طَرَفًا مِنَ الَّذينَ كَفَروا أَو يَكبِتَهُم فَيَنقَلِبوا خائِبينَ

His intent was to cut off a section of the unbelievers or restrain them, so they retreat in frustration.

لَيسَ لَكَ مِنَ الأَمرِ شَيءٌ أَو يَتوبَ عَلَيهِم أَو يُعَذِّبَهُم فَإِنَّهُم ظالِمونَ

It’s not for you to decide whether He should forgive or punish them; they are wrongdoers.

وَلِلَّهِ ما فِي السَّماواتِ وَما فِي الأَرضِ ۚ يَغفِرُ لِمَن يَشاءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشاءُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ

To God belongs everything in the heavens and everything on the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. God is Forgiving and Merciful.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا لا تَأكُلُوا الرِّبا أَضعافًا مُضاعَفَةً ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُم تُفلِحونَ

O you who believe, don’t consume usury, which accumulates and multiplies. Fear God, so that you may prosper.

وَاتَّقُوا النّارَ الَّتي أُعِدَّت لِلكافِرينَ

Protect yourselves from a Fire prepared for the unbelievers.

وَأَطيعُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسولَ لَعَلَّكُم تُرحَمونَ

And obey God and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.

وَسارِعوا إِلىٰ مَغفِرَةٍ مِن رَبِّكُم وَجَنَّةٍ عَرضُهَا السَّماواتُ وَالأَرضُ أُعِدَّت لِلمُتَّقينَ

Hurry to forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the pious.

الَّذينَ يُنفِقونَ فِي السَّرّاءِ وَالضَّرّاءِ وَالكاظِمينَ الغَيظَ وَالعافينَ عَنِ النّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ المُحسِنينَ

Those who spend during ease and hardship, restrain their anger, and pardon people—God loves the doers of good.

وَالَّذينَ إِذا فَعَلوا فاحِشَةً أَو ظَلَموا أَنفُسَهُم ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ فَاستَغفَروا لِذُنوبِهِم وَمَن يَغفِرُ الذُّنوبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَم يُصِرّوا عَلىٰ ما فَعَلوا وَهُم يَعلَمونَ

Those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember God and seek forgiveness for their sins. Who but God can forgive sins? And they don’t knowingly persist in their wrongdoing.

أُولـٰئِكَ جَزاؤُهُم مَغفِرَةٌ مِن رَبِّهِم وَجَنّاتٌ تَجري مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهارُ خالِدينَ فيها ۚ وَنِعمَ أَجرُ العامِلينَ

Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. How excellent is the reward for the workers!

قَد خَلَت مِن قَبلِكُم سُنَنٌ فَسيروا فِي الأَرضِ فَانظُروا كَيفَ كانَ عاقِبَةُ المُكَذِّبينَ

Numerous ways of life have passed before you. So, travel through the earth and observe how the end of the deniers was.

هـٰذا بَيانٌ لِلنّاسِ وَهُدًى وَمَوعِظَةٌ لِلمُتَّقينَ

This is a clear explanation for humanity, and guidance and advice for the righteous.

وَلا تَهِنوا وَلا تَحزَنوا وَأَنتُمُ الأَعلَونَ إِن كُنتُم مُؤمِنينَ

Don’t lose heart or be sad; you are the superior ones—if you are believers.

إِن يَمسَسكُم قَرحٌ فَقَد مَسَّ القَومَ قَرحٌ مِثلُهُ ۚ وَتِلكَ الأَيّامُ نُداوِلُها بَينَ النّاسِ وَلِيَعلَمَ اللَّهُ الَّذينَ آمَنوا وَيَتَّخِذَ مِنكُم شُهَداءَ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لا يُحِبُّ الظّالِمينَ

If a wound has touched you, similar wounds have touched the others. Such days We give to people by turns, so that God may identify those who believe, and take witnesses from among you. God doesn’t love the wrongdoers.

وَلِيُمَحِّصَ اللَّهُ الَّذينَ آمَنوا وَيَمحَقَ الكافِرينَ

And thus, God purifies the believers and destroys the unbelievers.

أَم حَسِبتُم أَن تَدخُلُوا الجَنَّةَ وَلَمّا يَعلَمِ اللَّهُ الَّذينَ جاهَدوا مِنكُم وَيَعلَمَ الصّابِرينَ

Did you think you would enter Paradise without God distinguishing those among you who strive for His cause and those who are steadfast?

وَلَقَد كُنتُم تَمَنَّونَ المَوتَ مِن قَبلِ أَن تَلقَوهُ فَقَد رَأَيتُموهُ وَأَنتُم تَنظُرونَ

You were desiring death before you met it. Now, you’ve seen it while looking.

وَما مُحَمَّدٌ إِلّا رَسولٌ قَد خَلَت مِن قَبلِهِ الرُّسُلُ ۚ أَفَإِن ماتَ أَو قُتِلَ انقَلَبتُم عَلىٰ أَعقابِكُم ۚ وَمَن يَنقَلِب عَلىٰ عَقِبَيهِ فَلَن يَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَيئًا ۗ وَسَيَجزِي اللَّهُ الشّاكِرينَ

Muhammad is only a messenger. Numerous messengers have preceded him. If he were to die or be killed, would you then turn back on your heels? Those who turn back won’t harm God in the least. God will reward the grateful.

وَما كانَ لِنَفسٍ أَن تَموتَ إِلّا بِإِذنِ اللَّهِ كِتابًا مُؤَجَّلًا ۗ وَمَن يُرِد ثَوابَ الدُّنيا نُؤتِهِ مِنها وَمَن يُرِد ثَوابَ الآخِرَةِ نُؤتِهِ مِنها ۚ وَسَنَجزِي الشّاكِرينَ

No soul can die except by God’s leave, at a time ordained. Whoever wants the rewards of this world, We will give him thereof. And whoever wants the rewards of the Hereafter, We will give him thereof. We will reward the thankful.

وَكَأَيِّن مِن نَبِيٍّ قاتَلَ مَعَهُ رِبِّيّونَ كَثيرٌ فَما وَهَنوا لِما أَصابَهُم في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ وَما ضَعُفوا وَمَا استَكانوا ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الصّابِرينَ

How many a prophet fought alongside him, many godly men? They didn’t waver in the face of what afflicted them in God’s path, nor did they weaken or give in. God loves the steadfast.

وَما كانَ قَولَهُم إِلّا أَن قالوا رَبَّنَا اغفِر لَنا ذُنوبَنا وَإِسرافَنا في أَمرِنا وَثَبِّت أَقدامَنا وَانصُرنا عَلَى القَومِ الكافِرينَ

Their only plea was, “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses in our affairs, strengthen our foothold, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

فَآتاهُمُ اللَّهُ ثَوابَ الدُّنيا وَحُسنَ ثَوابِ الآخِرَةِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ المُحسِنينَ

So, God granted them this world’s reward and the Hereafter’s excellent reward. And God loves the doers of good.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا إِن تُطيعُوا الَّذينَ كَفَروا يَرُدّوكُم عَلىٰ أَعقابِكُم فَتَنقَلِبوا خاسِرينَ

O you who believe, if you listen to the non-believers, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will become losers.

بَلِ اللَّهُ مَولاكُم ۖ وَهُوَ خَيرُ النّاصِرينَ

God is your Protector, and He is the best of helpers.

سَنُلقي في قُلوبِ الَّذينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعبَ بِما أَشرَكوا بِاللَّهِ ما لَم يُنَزِّل بِهِ سُلطانًا ۖ وَمَأواهُمُ النّارُ ۚ وَبِئسَ مَثوَى الظّالِمينَ

We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they associate partners with God without His authorization. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.

وَلَقَد صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعدَهُ إِذ تَحُسّونَهُم بِإِذنِهِ ۖ حَتّىٰ إِذا فَشِلتُم وَتَنازَعتُم فِي الأَمرِ وَعَصَيتُم مِن بَعدِ ما أَراكُم ما تُحِبّونَ ۚ مِنكُم مَن يُريدُ الدُّنيا وَمِنكُم مَن يُريدُ الآخِرَةَ ۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُم عَنهُم لِيَبتَلِيَكُم ۖ وَلَقَد عَفا عَنكُم ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذو فَضلٍ عَلَى المُؤمِنينَ

God fulfilled His promise to you when, by His permission, you were on the verge of defeating them. But you faltered, disputed, and disobeyed after He had shown you what you longed for. Some of you sought the worldly life, while others sought the Hereafter. Then He diverted you from them to test you. But He has since pardoned you. God is gracious to the believers.

إِذ تُصعِدونَ وَلا تَلوونَ عَلىٰ أَحَدٍ وَالرَّسولُ يَدعوكُم في أُخراكُم فَأَثابَكُم غَمًّا بِغَمٍّ لِكَيلا تَحزَنوا عَلىٰ ما فاتَكُم وَلا ما أَصابَكُم ۗ وَاللَّهُ خَبيرٌ بِما تَعمَلونَ

When you were fleeing, without looking back, while the Messenger was calling you from behind, He inflicted upon you one distress after another, so you would not grieve over what you missed or what befell you. God is fully aware of what you do.

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ عَلَيكُم مِن بَعدِ الغَمِّ أَمَنَةً نُعاسًا يَغشىٰ طائِفَةً مِنكُم ۖ وَطائِفَةٌ قَد أَهَمَّتهُم أَنفُسُهُم يَظُنّونَ بِاللَّهِ غَيرَ الحَقِّ ظَنَّ الجاهِلِيَّةِ ۖ يَقولونَ هَل لَنا مِنَ الأَمرِ مِن شَيءٍ ۗ قُل إِنَّ الأَمرَ كُلَّهُ لِلَّهِ ۗ يُخفونَ في أَنفُسِهِم ما لا يُبدونَ لَكَ ۖ يَقولونَ لَو كانَ لَنا مِنَ الأَمرِ شَيءٌ ما قُتِلنا هاهُنا ۗ قُل لَو كُنتُم في بُيوتِكُم لَبَرَزَ الَّذينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيهِمُ القَتلُ إِلىٰ مَضاجِعِهِم ۖ وَلِيَبتَلِيَ اللَّهُ ما في صُدورِكُم وَلِيُمَحِّصَ ما في قُلوبِكُم ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَليمٌ بِذاتِ الصُّدورِ

After the setback, He sent down tranquility upon you. A slumber overcame some of you, while others were concerned only about themselves, harboring misconceptions about God—thoughts of ignorance. They asked, “Do we have any say in the matter?” Say, “The entire affair rests with God.” They conceal within themselves what they don’t disclose to you. They say, “If we had control over the situation, we wouldn’t have been killed here.” Say, “Even if you had been inside your homes, those destined to be killed would have met their end.” Thus, God tests your inner selves and purifies your hearts. God is aware of the innermost thoughts.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ تَوَلَّوا مِنكُم يَومَ التَقَى الجَمعانِ إِنَّمَا استَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيطانُ بِبَعضِ ما كَسَبوا ۖ وَلَقَد عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنهُم ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفورٌ حَليمٌ

Those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, Satan caused them to stumble due to some of their deeds. But God has forgiven them. God is Forgiving and Forbearing.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا لا تَكونوا كَالَّذينَ كَفَروا وَقالوا لِإِخوانِهِم إِذا ضَرَبوا فِي الأَرضِ أَو كانوا غُزًّى لَو كانوا عِندَنا ما ماتوا وَما قُتِلوا لِيَجعَلَ اللَّهُ ذٰلِكَ حَسرَةً في قُلوبِهِم ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحيي وَيُميتُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِما تَعمَلونَ بَصيرٌ

O you who believe, don’t be like those who disbelieve, speaking of their brethren who marched in the land, or went on the offensive, “Had they stayed with us, they wouldn’t have died or been killed.” God makes this a source of regret in their hearts. God gives life and brings death, and God is observant of what you do.

وَلَئِن قُتِلتُم في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ أَو مُتُّم لَمَغفِرَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَحمَةٌ خَيرٌ مِمّا يَجمَعونَ

If you are killed or die in God’s cause, surely God’s forgiveness and mercy are better than what they accumulate.

وَلَئِن مُتُّم أَو قُتِلتُم لَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُحشَرونَ

Whether you die or are killed, to God you will be gathered.

فَبِما رَحمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُم ۖ وَلَو كُنتَ فَظًّا غَليظَ القَلبِ لَانفَضّوا مِن حَولِكَ ۖ فَاعفُ عَنهُم وَاستَغفِر لَهُم وَشاوِرهُم فِي الأَمرِ ۖ فَإِذا عَزَمتَ فَتَوَكَّل عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ المُتَوَكِّلينَ

Due to the Mercy of God, you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would’ve dispersed from around you. So forgive them, pray for their forgiveness, and consult with them in the matter. Once you’ve decided, put your trust in God. God loves those who trust.

إِن يَنصُركُمُ اللَّهُ فَلا غالِبَ لَكُم ۖ وَإِن يَخذُلكُم فَمَن ذَا الَّذي يَنصُرُكُم مِن بَعدِهِ ۗ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَليَتَوَكَّلِ المُؤمِنونَ

If God helps you, none can defeat you, and if He forsakes you, who else can assist you? Therefore, let the believers put their trust in God.

وَما كانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَن يَغُلَّ ۚ وَمَن يَغلُل يَأتِ بِما غَلَّ يَومَ القِيامَةِ ۚ ثُمَّ تُوَفّىٰ كُلُّ نَفسٍ ما كَسَبَت وَهُم لا يُظلَمونَ

It is not for a prophet to defraud. Whoever cheats will bring his cheating with him on Resurrection Day. Then, every soul will be fully compensated for its deeds and won’t be wronged.

أَفَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضوانَ اللَّهِ كَمَن باءَ بِسَخَطٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَأواهُ جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَبِئسَ المَصيرُ

Is one who follows God’s approval like one who incurred God’s wrath and whose dwelling is Hell—a miserable destination?

هُم دَرَجاتٌ عِندَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بَصيرٌ بِما يَعمَلونَ

These are distinct positions before God, and God sees what they do.

لَقَد مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى المُؤمِنينَ إِذ بَعَثَ فيهِم رَسولًا مِن أَنفُسِهِم يَتلو عَلَيهِم آياتِهِ وَيُزَكّيهِم وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الكِتابَ وَالحِكمَةَ وَإِن كانوا مِن قَبلُ لَفي ضَلالٍ مُبينٍ

God has been gracious to the believers when He sent a Messenger from among them, who conveys His verses to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and wisdom. Before this, they were clearly astray.

أَوَلَمّا أَصابَتكُم مُصيبَةٌ قَد أَصَبتُم مِثلَيها قُلتُم أَنّىٰ هـٰذا ۖ قُل هُوَ مِن عِندِ أَنفُسِكُم ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ

When tragedy befell you, even though you had inflicted twice as much, you asked, “How did this happen?” Say, “It is from your own selves.” God has power over all things.

وَما أَصابَكُم يَومَ التَقَى الجَمعانِ فَبِإِذنِ اللَّهِ وَلِيَعلَمَ المُؤمِنينَ

What transpired on the day the two armies met was, by God’s decree, to test the believers.

وَلِيَعلَمَ الَّذينَ نافَقوا ۚ وَقيلَ لَهُم تَعالَوا قاتِلوا في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ أَوِ ادفَعوا ۖ قالوا لَو نَعلَمُ قِتالًا لَاتَّبَعناكُم ۗ هُم لِلكُفرِ يَومَئِذٍ أَقرَبُ مِنهُم لِلإيمانِ ۚ يَقولونَ بِأَفواهِهِم ما لَيسَ في قُلوبِهِم ۗ وَاللَّهُ أَعلَمُ بِما يَكتُمونَ

And to expose the hypocrites. They were told, “Come, fight in the path of God, or at least defend.” They responded, “If we knew how to fight, we would follow you.” On that day, they were nearer to disbelief than to belief. They say with their mouths what’s not in their hearts. God is fully aware of what they conceal.

الَّذينَ قالوا لِإِخوانِهِم وَقَعَدوا لَو أَطاعونا ما قُتِلوا ۗ قُل فَادرَءوا عَن أَنفُسِكُمُ المَوتَ إِن كُنتُم صادِقينَ

Those who stayed behind said of their brothers, “If they had obeyed us, they wouldn’t have been killed.” Say, “Then fend off death from yourselves, if you are sincere.”

وَلا تَحسَبَنَّ الَّذينَ قُتِلوا في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ أَمواتًا ۚ بَل أَحياءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِم يُرزَقونَ

Don’t consider those who were killed in God’s cause as dead. Instead, they are alive, in the presence of their Lord, being provided for.

فَرِحينَ بِما آتاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضلِهِ وَيَستَبشِرونَ بِالَّذينَ لَم يَلحَقوا بِهِم مِن خَلفِهِم أَلّا خَوفٌ عَلَيهِم وَلا هُم يَحزَنونَ

Rejoicing in what God bestowed upon them of His bounty, they are glad for those who haven’t yet joined them, because they will have no fear or sadness.

يَستَبشِرونَ بِنِعمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضلٍ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُضيعُ أَجرَ المُؤمِنينَ

They rejoice in God’s favor and bounty, and that God won’t let the reward of the believers go to waste.

الَّذينَ استَجابوا لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسولِ مِن بَعدِ ما أَصابَهُمُ القَرحُ ۚ لِلَّذينَ أَحسَنوا مِنهُم وَاتَّقَوا أَجرٌ عَظيمٌ

Those who respond to God and the Messenger, even in the face of adversity, and maintain their righteousness and devotion, are promised a grand reward.

الَّذينَ قالَ لَهُمُ النّاسُ إِنَّ النّاسَ قَد جَمَعوا لَكُم فَاخشَوهُم فَزادَهُم إيمانًا وَقالوا حَسبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعمَ الوَكيلُ

Those to whom people said, “The people have amassed against you, so fear them,” it only increased their faith, and they responded, “God is sufficient for us, and what an excellent guardian He is.”

فَانقَلَبوا بِنِعمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضلٍ لَم يَمسَسهُم سوءٌ وَاتَّبَعوا رِضوانَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذو فَضلٍ عَظيمٍ

So they returned with a favor and bounty from God, and no harm touched them. They followed the pleasure of God; and God possesses great bounty.

إِنَّما ذٰلِكُمُ الشَّيطانُ يُخَوِّفُ أَولِياءَهُ فَلا تَخافوهُم وَخافونِ إِن كُنتُم مُؤمِنينَ

It is only Satan who frightens his followers. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are true believers.

وَلا يَحزُنكَ الَّذينَ يُسارِعونَ فِي الكُفرِ ۚ إِنَّهُم لَن يَضُرُّوا اللَّهَ شَيئًا ۗ يُريدُ اللَّهُ أَلّا يَجعَلَ لَهُم حَظًّا فِي الآخِرَةِ ۖ وَلَهُم عَذابٌ عَظيمٌ

Don’t grieve over those who rush into disbelief. They can’t harm God. God intends to give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a painful punishment.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ اشتَرَوُا الكُفرَ بِالإيمانِ لَن يَضُرُّوا اللَّهَ شَيئًا وَلَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

Those who purchase disbelief at the cost of faith can’t harm God at all, and a severe punishment awaits them.

وَلا يَحسَبَنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَروا أَنَّما نُملي لَهُم خَيرٌ لِأَنفُسِهِم ۚ إِنَّما نُملي لَهُم لِيَزدادوا إِثمًا ۚ وَلَهُم عَذابٌ مُهينٌ

Don’t assume that the respite We grant the unbelievers is for their good. We only delay their punishment so they may increase in sin. And they will face a humiliating punishment.

ما كانَ اللَّهُ لِيَذَرَ المُؤمِنينَ عَلىٰ ما أَنتُم عَلَيهِ حَتّىٰ يَميزَ الخَبيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ ۗ وَما كانَ اللَّهُ لِيُطلِعَكُم عَلَى الغَيبِ وَلـٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَجتَبي مِن رُسُلِهِ مَن يَشاءُ ۖ فَآمِنوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ ۚ وَإِن تُؤمِنوا وَتَتَّقوا فَلَكُم أَجرٌ عَظيمٌ

God will not leave the believers in the condition you’re in until He distinguishes the wicked from the good. Nor would God disclose to you the unseen. However, God selects from His messengers whom He wills. So, believe in God and His messengers. If you maintain your faith and righteousness, you will receive an immense reward.

وَلا يَحسَبَنَّ الَّذينَ يَبخَلونَ بِما آتاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضلِهِ هُوَ خَيرًا لَهُم ۖ بَل هُوَ شَرٌّ لَهُم ۖ سَيُطَوَّقونَ ما بَخِلوا بِهِ يَومَ القِيامَةِ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ ميراثُ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِما تَعمَلونَ خَبيرٌ

Let not those who withhold what God has given them of His bounty think it’s good for them. In fact, it’s detrimental to them. They will be besieged by what they hoarded on Resurrection Day. To God belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and God is well-acquainted with what you do.

لَقَد سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَولَ الَّذينَ قالوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَقيرٌ وَنَحنُ أَغنِياءُ ۘ سَنَكتُبُ ما قالوا وَقَتلَهُمُ الأَنبِياءَ بِغَيرِ حَقٍّ وَنَقولُ ذوقوا عَذابَ الحَريقِ

God has heard the statement of those who said, “God is impoverished, and we are wealthy.” We will record what they said, along with their unjust killing of the prophets, and We will say, “Taste the suffering of the blaze.”

ذٰلِكَ بِما قَدَّمَت أَيديكُم وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيسَ بِظَلّامٍ لِلعَبيدِ

This is because of what your hands have put forth. God is never unjust to the beings.

الَّذينَ قالوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَهِدَ إِلَينا أَلّا نُؤمِنَ لِرَسولٍ حَتّىٰ يَأتِيَنا بِقُربانٍ تَأكُلُهُ النّارُ ۗ قُل قَد جاءَكُم رُسُلٌ مِن قَبلي بِالبَيِّناتِ وَبِالَّذي قُلتُم فَلِمَ قَتَلتُموهُم إِن كُنتُم صادِقينَ

Those who say, “God covenanted with us that we shouldn’t believe in any messenger unless he brings us a sacrificial offering consumed by fire.” Say, “Surely, messengers have come to you before me with clear signs and with what you said. Why then did you kill them, if you are truthful?”

فَإِن كَذَّبوكَ فَقَد كُذِّبَ رُسُلٌ مِن قَبلِكَ جاءوا بِالبَيِّناتِ وَالزُّبُرِ وَالكِتابِ المُنيرِ

If they reject you, so were messengers before you also rejected. They came with clear signs, scriptures, and the Enlightening Book.

كُلُّ نَفسٍ ذائِقَةُ المَوتِ ۗ وَإِنَّما تُوَفَّونَ أُجورَكُم يَومَ القِيامَةِ ۖ فَمَن زُحزِحَ عَنِ النّارِ وَأُدخِلَ الجَنَّةَ فَقَد فازَ ۗ وَمَا الحَياةُ الدُّنيا إِلّا مَتاعُ الغُرورِ

Every soul will taste death. Then, you will receive your full compensation on Resurrection Day. Whoever is swayed from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has succeeded. The life of this world is nothing but an enjoyment of delusion.

لَتُبلَوُنَّ في أَموالِكُم وَأَنفُسِكُم وَلَتَسمَعُنَّ مِنَ الَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ مِن قَبلِكُم وَمِنَ الَّذينَ أَشرَكوا أَذًى كَثيرًا ۚ وَإِن تَصبِروا وَتَتَّقوا فَإِنَّ ذٰلِكَ مِن عَزمِ الأُمورِ

You will be tested in your possessions and yourselves, and you will hear many hurtful comments from those who were given the Scripture before you, and from the idolaters. But if you are patient and righteous, that will be a pivotal stance.

وَإِذ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ ميثاقَ الَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُ لِلنّاسِ وَلا تَكتُمونَهُ فَنَبَذوهُ وَراءَ ظُهورِهِم وَاشتَرَوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَليلًا ۖ فَبِئسَ ما يَشتَرونَ

God took a covenant from those given the Scripture: “You must make it known to people and not conceal it.” Yet they threw it away behind their backs, selling it for a trivial price. Evil is what they’ve purchased!

لا تَحسَبَنَّ الَّذينَ يَفرَحونَ بِما أَتَوا وَيُحِبّونَ أَن يُحمَدوا بِما لَم يَفعَلوا فَلا تَحسَبَنَّهُم بِمَفازَةٍ مِنَ العَذابِ ۖ وَلَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

Don’t think that those who take pride in their deeds, and they love to be praised for what they haven’t done, will evade punishment. A severe punishment awaits them.

وَلِلَّهِ مُلكُ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ

To God belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. God has power over all things.

إِنَّ في خَلقِ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ وَاختِلافِ اللَّيلِ وَالنَّهارِ لَآياتٍ لِأُولِي الأَلبابِ

In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the cycle of night and day, there are signs for those with discernment.

الَّذينَ يَذكُرونَ اللَّهَ قِيامًا وَقُعودًا وَعَلىٰ جُنوبِهِم وَيَتَفَكَّرونَ في خَلقِ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ رَبَّنا ما خَلَقتَ هـٰذا باطِلًا سُبحانَكَ فَقِنا عَذابَ النّارِ

Those who remember God while standing, sitting, or on their sides, and reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You didn’t create all this in vain. Glory be to You. Protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

رَبَّنا إِنَّكَ مَن تُدخِلِ النّارَ فَقَد أَخزَيتَهُ ۖ وَما لِلظّالِمينَ مِن أَنصارٍ

“Our Lord, indeed, whomever You admit to the Fire, You’ve utterly disgraced. The wrongdoers have no helpers.”

رَبَّنا إِنَّنا سَمِعنا مُنادِيًا يُنادي لِلإيمانِ أَن آمِنوا بِرَبِّكُم فَآمَنّا ۚ رَبَّنا فَاغفِر لَنا ذُنوبَنا وَكَفِّر عَنّا سَيِّئَاتِنا وَتَوَفَّنا مَعَ الأَبرارِ

“Our Lord, we’ve heard a caller calling to faith: ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us of our sins, wipe away from us our misdeeds, and make us die with the virtuous.”

رَبَّنا وَآتِنا ما وَعَدتَنا عَلىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلا تُخزِنا يَومَ القِيامَةِ ۗ إِنَّكَ لا تُخلِفُ الميعادَ

“Our Lord, fulfill what You’ve promised us through Your messengers, and don’t disgrace us on Resurrection Day. Surely, You never break Your promise.”

فَاستَجابَ لَهُم رَبُّهُم أَنّي لا أُضيعُ عَمَلَ عامِلٍ مِنكُم مِن ذَكَرٍ أَو أُنثىٰ ۖ بَعضُكُم مِن بَعضٍ ۖ فَالَّذينَ هاجَروا وَأُخرِجوا مِن دِيارِهِم وَأوذوا في سَبيلي وَقاتَلوا وَقُتِلوا لَأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنهُم سَيِّئَاتِهِم وَلَأُدخِلَنَّهُم جَنّاتٍ تَجري مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهارُ ثَوابًا مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسنُ الثَّوابِ

Their Lord responded to them, “I won’t allow the work of any worker among you, whether male or female, be wasted. You are from one another. Those who emigrated, were expelled from their homes, suffered in My cause, fought, and were killed—I will absolve them of their misdeeds, and I will admit them into Gardens through which rivers flow. This is a reward from God, and with God lies the best reward.”

لا يَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ الَّذينَ كَفَروا فِي البِلادِ

Let not the activities of the unbelievers in the land deceive you.

مَتاعٌ قَليلٌ ثُمَّ مَأواهُم جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَبِئسَ المِهادُ

It’s a brief enjoyment. Then their dwelling will be Hell—what a wretched resting place!

لـٰكِنِ الَّذينَ اتَّقَوا رَبَّهُم لَهُم جَنّاتٌ تَجري مِن تَحتِهَا الأَنهارُ خالِدينَ فيها نُزُلًا مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَما عِندَ اللَّهِ خَيرٌ لِلأَبرارِ

However, those who revere their Lord will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will dwell forever—a welcome from God. What is with God is best for the pure.

وَإِنَّ مِن أَهلِ الكِتابِ لَمَن يُؤمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَيكُم وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَيهِم خاشِعينَ لِلَّهِ لا يَشتَرونَ بِآياتِ اللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَليلًا ۗ أُولـٰئِكَ لَهُم أَجرُهُم عِندَ رَبِّهِم ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَريعُ الحِسابِ

Among the People of the Scripture, there are some who believe in God, in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed to them. They are humble towards God, they don’t sell God’s verses for a meager price. These will have their reward with their Lord. God is swift in reckoning.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنُوا اصبِروا وَصابِروا وَرابِطوا وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُم تُفلِحونَ

O you who believe, be patient, vie in perseverance, stand firm, and be mindful of God, so that you may succeed.
