قالوا بَل لَم تَكونوا مُؤمِنينَ

The others will respond, “No, you yourselves were not believers.

وَما كانَ لَنا عَلَيكُم مِن سُلطانٍ ۖ بَل كُنتُم قَومًا طاغينَ

We had no authority over you; you were a transgressing people.

فَحَقَّ عَلَينا قَولُ رَبِّنا ۖ إِنّا لَذائِقونَ

So now the word of our Lord has come true against us. We are tasting it.

فَأَغوَيناكُم إِنّا كُنّا غاوينَ

We seduced you; we were seducers.”

فَإِنَّهُم يَومَئِذٍ فِي العَذابِ مُشتَرِكونَ

On that Day, they will share in the punishment.

إِنَّهُم كانوا إِذا قيلَ لَهُم لا إِلـٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَستَكبِرونَ

When they were told, “There is no god but God,” they exhibited arrogance.

وَيَقولونَ أَئِنّا لَتارِكو آلِهَتِنا لِشاعِرٍ مَجنونٍ

And they said, “Shall we leave our gods for a mad poet?”

بَل جاءَ بِالحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ المُرسَلينَ

He came with the truth and confirmed the messengers.

إِنَّكُم لَذائِقُو العَذابِ الأَليمِ

You will surely taste the severe punishment.

وَما تُجزَونَ إِلّا ما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ

And you will only be recompensed for what you used to do.
