بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ وَالطّورِ

By the Mount.

وَكِتابٍ مَسطورٍ

And a Scripture inscribed.

في رَقٍّ مَنشورٍ

In a published scroll.

وَالبَيتِ المَعمورِ

And the frequented House.

وَالسَّقفِ المَرفوعِ

And the elevated roof.

وَالبَحرِ المَسجورِ

And the surging sea.

إِنَّ عَذابَ رَبِّكَ لَواقِعٌ

The punishment of your Lord will occur.

ما لَهُ مِن دافِعٍ

No one can avert it.

يَومَ تَمورُ السَّماءُ مَورًا

On the Day when the heavens sways in agitation.

وَتَسيرُ الجِبالُ سَيرًا

And the mountains are set in motion.

فَوَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ

Woe, on that Day, to the deniers.

الَّذينَ هُم في خَوضٍ يَلعَبونَ

Those who are engrossed in vanity.

يَومَ يُدَعّونَ إِلىٰ نارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا

On that Day, they will be pushed into the Fire of Hell.

هـٰذِهِ النّارُ الَّتي كُنتُم بِها تُكَذِّبونَ

“This is the very Fire which you used to deny.

أَفَسِحرٌ هـٰذا أَم أَنتُم لا تُبصِرونَ

Is this magic, or do you not see?

اصلَوها فَاصبِروا أَو لا تَصبِروا سَواءٌ عَلَيكُم ۖ إِنَّما تُجزَونَ ما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ

Burn therein, it’s the same for you whether you bear it patiently, or not. You are only being recompensed for what you used to do.

إِنَّ المُتَّقينَ في جَنّاتٍ وَنَعيمٍ

However, the righteous will be in gardens of pleasure.

فاكِهينَ بِما آتاهُم رَبُّهُم وَوَقاهُم رَبُّهُم عَذابَ الجَحيمِ

Delighted with what their Lord has given them, and their Lord has shielded them from the punishment of the Blaze.

كُلوا وَاشرَبوا هَنيئًا بِما كُنتُم تَعمَلونَ

“Eat and drink cheerfully, as a reward for your endeavors.”

مُتَّكِئينَ عَلىٰ سُرُرٍ مَصفوفَةٍ ۖ وَزَوَّجناهُم بِحورٍ عينٍ

Reclining on luxurious furnishings, We will pair them with splendid companions.

وَالَّذينَ آمَنوا وَاتَّبَعَتهُم ذُرِّيَّتُهُم بِإيمانٍ أَلحَقنا بِهِم ذُرِّيَّتَهُم وَما أَلَتناهُم مِن عَمَلِهِم مِن شَيءٍ ۚ كُلُّ امرِئٍ بِما كَسَبَ رَهينٌ

Those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith, We will join with them, their offspring, and We won’t reduce anything from their deeds. Every person is held in pledge for what he earned.

وَأَمدَدناهُم بِفاكِهَةٍ وَلَحمٍ مِمّا يَشتَهونَ

We will supply them with fruits and meats, as they desire.

يَتَنازَعونَ فيها كَأسًا لا لَغوٌ فيها وَلا تَأثيمٌ

Circulated among them will be a cup, causing neither vain talk nor sinful behavior.

وَيَطوفُ عَلَيهِم غِلمانٌ لَهُم كَأَنَّهُم لُؤلُؤٌ مَكنونٌ

They will be served by youthful attendants as hidden pearls.

وَأَقبَلَ بَعضُهُم عَلىٰ بَعضٍ يَتَساءَلونَ

They will approach one another, inquiring.

قالوا إِنّا كُنّا قَبلُ في أَهلِنا مُشفِقينَ

They will say, “Previously, we were anxious about our families.

فَمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَينا وَوَقانا عَذابَ السَّمومِ

But God blessed us and protected us from the torment of the Scorching Winds.

إِنّا كُنّا مِن قَبلُ نَدعوهُ ۖ إِنَّهُ هُوَ البَرُّ الرَّحيمُ

We used to pray to Him. He is the Benevolent, the Merciful.”

فَذَكِّر فَما أَنتَ بِنِعمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكاهِنٍ وَلا مَجنونٍ

So, remind them. You are not, by the grace of your Lord, a fortune teller or insane.

أَم يَقولونَ شاعِرٌ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيبَ المَنونِ

Do they say, “A poet, we await his demise?”

قُل تَرَبَّصوا فَإِنّي مَعَكُم مِنَ المُتَرَبِّصينَ

Say, “Wait; I am waiting with you.”

أَم تَأمُرُهُم أَحلامُهُم بِهـٰذا ۚ أَم هُم قَومٌ طاغونَ

Are their dreams prompting them to do this? Or are they rebellious people?

أَم يَقولونَ تَقَوَّلَهُ ۚ بَل لا يُؤمِنونَ

Or do they say, “He made it up”? They can’t be sure.

فَليَأتوا بِحَديثٍ مِثلِهِ إِن كانوا صادِقينَ

Then, let them produce a similar statement—if they are truthful.

أَم خُلِقوا مِن غَيرِ شَيءٍ أَم هُمُ الخالِقونَ

Or were they created from nonexistence? Or are they the creators?

أَم خَلَقُوا السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضَ ۚ بَل لا يوقِنونَ

Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Certainly, they lack conviction.

أَم عِندَهُم خَزائِنُ رَبِّكَ أَم هُمُ المُصَيطِرونَ

Or do they possess your Lord’s treasures? Or are they the ones in control?

أَم لَهُم سُلَّمٌ يَستَمِعونَ فيهِ ۖ فَليَأتِ مُستَمِعُهُم بِسُلطانٍ مُبينٍ

Or do they have a ladder by which they can listen in? Then, let their listener produce clear authority.

أَم لَهُ البَناتُ وَلَكُمُ البَنونَ

Or does He have daughters while you have sons?

أَم تَسأَلُهُم أَجرًا فَهُم مِن مَغرَمٍ مُثقَلونَ

Or is it that you ask them for a fee, so they are burdened by a debt?

أَم عِندَهُمُ الغَيبُ فَهُم يَكتُبونَ

Or do they know the Unseen, so they write it down?

أَم يُريدونَ كَيدًا ۖ فَالَّذينَ كَفَروا هُمُ المَكيدونَ

Or are they plotting a scheme? But those who disbelieve are the ones trapped in their plot.

أَم لَهُم إِلـٰهٌ غَيرُ اللَّهِ ۚ سُبحانَ اللَّهِ عَمّا يُشرِكونَ

Or do they have a god other than God? Exalted is God, far above what they associate with Him.

وَإِن يَرَوا كِسفًا مِنَ السَّماءِ ساقِطًا يَقولوا سَحابٌ مَركومٌ

Even if they were to see pieces of the sky falling, they would say, “Clouds, piled up.”

فَذَرهُم حَتّىٰ يُلاقوا يَومَهُمُ الَّذي فيهِ يُصعَقونَ

So, leave them until they encounter their Day, when they will be thunderstruck.

يَومَ لا يُغني عَنهُم كَيدُهُم شَيئًا وَلا هُم يُنصَرونَ

On that Day, their plotting won’t avail them, nor will they be helped.

وَإِنَّ لِلَّذينَ ظَلَموا عَذابًا دونَ ذٰلِكَ وَلـٰكِنَّ أَكثَرَهُم لا يَعلَمونَ

For those who perpetrate injustice, there is a punishment even more severe, yet most of them are unaware.

وَاصبِر لِحُكمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعيُنِنا ۖ وَسَبِّح بِحَمدِ رَبِّكَ حينَ تَقومُ

Wait patiently for the judgment of your Lord; you are under Our vigilant observation. Praise your Lord when you arise.

وَمِنَ اللَّيلِ فَسَبِّحهُ وَإِدبارَ النُّجومِ

And glorify Him during the night, and as the stars retreat.
