Surah Ad-Dukhan - The Smoke

الدخان
Verse 1

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ حم

Ha, Meem.

Verse 2

وَالكِتابِ المُبينِ

By the clear, enlightening Scripture.

Verse 3

إِنّا أَنزَلناهُ في لَيلَةٍ مُبارَكَةٍ ۚ إِنّا كُنّا مُنذِرينَ

We revealed it on a blessed night—We’ve been warning.

Verse 4

فيها يُفرَقُ كُلُّ أَمرٍ حَكيمٍ

On that night, every wise matter is made distinct.

Verse 5

أَمرًا مِن عِندِنا ۚ إِنّا كُنّا مُرسِلينَ

A command from Us—We’ve been sending messengers.

Verse 6

رَحمَةً مِن رَبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّميعُ العَليمُ

As a mercy from your Lord—He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Verse 7

رَبِّ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضِ وَما بَينَهُما ۖ إِن كُنتُم موقِنينَ

The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that’s between them—if you are certain.

Verse 8

لا إِلـٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ يُحيي وَيُميتُ ۖ رَبُّكُم وَرَبُّ آبائِكُمُ الأَوَّلينَ

There is no god but He. He gives life and causes death—your Lord and the Lord of your ancestors.

Verse 9

بَل هُم في شَكٍّ يَلعَبونَ

Still, they are playing in doubt.

Verse 10

فَارتَقِب يَومَ تَأتِي السَّماءُ بِدُخانٍ مُبينٍ

Await the day when the sky will bring visible smoke.

Verse 11

يَغشَى النّاسَ ۖ هـٰذا عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

It will envelop the people: this is a painful punishment.

Verse 12

رَبَّنَا اكشِف عَنَّا العَذابَ إِنّا مُؤمِنونَ

“Our Lord, lift from us the punishment; we are believers.”

Verse 13

أَنّىٰ لَهُمُ الذِّكرىٰ وَقَد جاءَهُم رَسولٌ مُبينٌ

How can there be a reminder for them, since a clear Messenger has already come to them?

Verse 14

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوا عَنهُ وَقالوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجنونٌ

Yet they turned away from him and said, “He is tutored, a madman.”

Verse 15

إِنّا كاشِفُو العَذابِ قَليلًا ۚ إِنَّكُم عائِدونَ

We will withdraw the punishment a little. But you will surely return.

Verse 16

يَومَ نَبطِشُ البَطشَةَ الكُبرىٰ إِنّا مُنتَقِمونَ

The Day We will strike with the greatest assault—We will take revenge.

Verse 17

وَلَقَد فَتَنّا قَبلَهُم قَومَ فِرعَونَ وَجاءَهُم رَسولٌ كَريمٌ

Before them, We tested the people of Pharaoh, when a noble messenger came to them.

Verse 18

أَن أَدّوا إِلَيَّ عِبادَ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنّي لَكُم رَسولٌ أَمينٌ

“Hand over to me God’s servants. I am definitely a reliable messenger to you.

Verse 19

وَأَن لا تَعلوا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ إِنّي آتيكُم بِسُلطانٍ مُبينٍ

And don’t exalt yourselves against God; I’ve come to you with clear authority.

Verse 20

وَإِنّي عُذتُ بِرَبّي وَرَبِّكُم أَن تَرجُمونِ

I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.

Verse 21

وَإِن لَم تُؤمِنوا لي فَاعتَزِلونِ

If you don’t believe me, then keep your distance from me.”

Verse 22

فَدَعا رَبَّهُ أَنَّ هـٰؤُلاءِ قَومٌ مُجرِمونَ

Then, he implored his Lord, “These are criminal people.”

Verse 23

فَأَسرِ بِعِبادي لَيلًا إِنَّكُم مُتَّبَعونَ

“Depart with My servants by night—you will be pursued.

Verse 24

وَاترُكِ البَحرَ رَهوًا ۖ إِنَّهُم جُندٌ مُغرَقونَ

And leave the sea in stillness; they are soldiers to be drowned.”

Verse 25

كَم تَرَكوا مِن جَنّاتٍ وَعُيونٍ

How many gardens and springs did they leave behind?

Verse 26

وَزُروعٍ وَمَقامٍ كَريمٍ

And fields and noble sites.

Verse 27

وَنَعمَةٍ كانوا فيها فاكِهينَ

And comfort wherein they were amused.

Verse 28

كَذٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَورَثناها قَومًا آخَرينَ

Thus, and We made it an inheritance for another people.

Verse 29

فَما بَكَت عَلَيهِمُ السَّماءُ وَالأَرضُ وَما كانوا مُنظَرينَ

Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they reprieved.

Verse 30

وَلَقَد نَجَّينا بَني إِسرائيلَ مِنَ العَذابِ المُهينِ

We rescued the Children of Israel from the degrading torment.

Verse 31

مِن فِرعَونَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كانَ عالِيًا مِنَ المُسرِفينَ

From Pharaoh. He was a tyrant, an oppressor.

Verse 32

وَلَقَدِ اختَرناهُم عَلىٰ عِلمٍ عَلَى العالَمينَ

And We knowingly chose them over the worlds.

Verse 33

وَآتَيناهُم مِنَ الآياتِ ما فيهِ بَلاءٌ مُبينٌ

We gave them signs in which there were transparent trials.

Verse 34

إِنَّ هـٰؤُلاءِ لَيَقولونَ

Yet these people say:

Verse 35

إِن هِيَ إِلّا مَوتَتُنَا الأولىٰ وَما نَحنُ بِمُنشَرينَ

“There is only our first death, and we won’t be resurrected.

Verse 36

فَأتوا بِآبائِنا إِن كُنتُم صادِقينَ

Then bring back our ancestors, if you are truthful.”

Verse 37

أَهُم خَيرٌ أَم قَومُ تُبَّعٍ وَالَّذينَ مِن قَبلِهِم ۚ أَهلَكناهُم ۖ إِنَّهُم كانوا مُجرِمينَ

Are they better than the people of Tubba and those before them? We destroyed them because they were criminals.

Verse 38

وَما خَلَقنَا السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضَ وَما بَينَهُما لاعِبينَ

We didn’t create the heavens, the earth, and everything in between in play.

Verse 39

ما خَلَقناهُما إِلّا بِالحَقِّ وَلـٰكِنَّ أَكثَرَهُم لا يَعلَمونَ

We created them only in truth, but most of them don’t know.

Verse 40

إِنَّ يَومَ الفَصلِ ميقاتُهُم أَجمَعينَ

The Day of Decision is their appointed time, all of them.

Verse 41

يَومَ لا يُغني مَولًى عَن مَولًى شَيئًا وَلا هُم يُنصَرونَ

The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped.

Verse 42

إِلّا مَن رَحِمَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ العَزيزُ الرَّحيمُ

Except those on whom God has mercy. He is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Verse 43

إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقّومِ

The Tree of Bitterness.

Verse 44

طَعامُ الأَثيمِ

Food of the sinners.

Verse 45

كَالمُهلِ يَغلي فِي البُطونِ

Like molten brass, it boils in the bellies.

Verse 46

كَغَليِ الحَميمِ

Like the boiling of seething water.

Verse 47

خُذوهُ فَاعتِلوهُ إِلىٰ سَواءِ الجَحيمِ

“Grab him and drag him into the middle of the Hellfire.

Verse 48

ثُمَّ صُبّوا فَوقَ رَأسِهِ مِن عَذابِ الحَميمِ

Then, pour over his head from the suffering of the Inferno.

Verse 49

ذُق إِنَّكَ أَنتَ العَزيزُ الكَريمُ

Taste! For you are the mighty, the noble one!

Verse 50

إِنَّ هـٰذا ما كُنتُم بِهِ تَمتَرونَ

This is what you used to question.”

Verse 51

إِنَّ المُتَّقينَ في مَقامٍ أَمينٍ

As for the righteous, they will be in a safe place.

Verse 52

في جَنّاتٍ وَعُيونٍ

Amid gardens and springs.

Verse 53

يَلبَسونَ مِن سُندُسٍ وَإِستَبرَقٍ مُتَقابِلينَ

Clothed in fine silk and heavy brocade, facing each other.

Verse 54

كَذٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجناهُم بِحورٍ عينٍ

Thus. And We will pair them with pure companions with beautiful eyes.

Verse 55

يَدعونَ فيها بِكُلِّ فاكِهَةٍ آمِنينَ

They will call for fruit therein, in peace and tranquility.

Verse 56

لا يَذوقونَ فيهَا المَوتَ إِلَّا المَوتَةَ الأولىٰ ۖ وَوَقاهُم عَذابَ الجَحيمِ

Therein, they will taste no death, beyond the first death. And He will shield them from the torment of Hellfire.

Verse 57

فَضلًا مِن رَبِّكَ ۚ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الفَوزُ العَظيمُ

As a bounty from your Lord. That is the grand success.

Verse 58

فَإِنَّما يَسَّرناهُ بِلِسانِكَ لَعَلَّهُم يَتَذَكَّرونَ

We’ve made it easy in your language, so they may reflect.

Verse 59

فَارتَقِب إِنَّهُم مُرتَقِبونَ

So, wait. They too are waiting.
