بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ إِذا وَقَعَتِ الواقِعَةُ

When the Inevitability takes place.

لَيسَ لِوَقعَتِها كاذِبَةٌ

There will be no denying its occurrence.

خافِضَةٌ رافِعَةٌ

Lowering, elevating.

إِذا رُجَّتِ الأَرضُ رَجًّا

When the earth is violently shaken.

وَبُسَّتِ الجِبالُ بَسًّا

And the mountains are reduced to fine dust.

فَكانَت هَباءً مُنبَثًّا

Becoming dispersed dust.

وَكُنتُم أَزواجًا ثَلاثَةً

You will be sorted into three categories.

فَأَصحابُ المَيمَنَةِ ما أَصحابُ المَيمَنَةِ

Those on the Right—what of those on the Right?

وَأَصحابُ المَشأَمَةِ ما أَصحابُ المَشأَمَةِ

And those on the Left—what of those on the Left?

وَالسّابِقونَ السّابِقونَ

And the forerunners, the foremost.

أُولـٰئِكَ المُقَرَّبونَ

Those drawn near.

في جَنّاتِ النَّعيمِ

In the Gardens of Delight.

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الأَوَّلينَ

A multitude from the earliest generations.

وَقَليلٌ مِنَ الآخِرينَ

And a few from the later ones.

عَلىٰ سُرُرٍ مَوضونَةٍ

Upon ornate thrones.

مُتَّكِئينَ عَلَيها مُتَقابِلينَ

Facing each other.

يَطوفُ عَلَيهِم وِلدانٌ مُخَلَّدونَ

Eternalized youths will circulate among them.

بِأَكوابٍ وَأَباريقَ وَكَأسٍ مِن مَعينٍ

With pitchers and cups filled with a crystal-clear drink.

لا يُصَدَّعونَ عَنها وَلا يُنزِفونَ

Which neither induces headaches nor intoxication.

وَفاكِهَةٍ مِمّا يَتَخَيَّرونَ

And fruits of whatever they choose.

وَلَحمِ طَيرٍ مِمّا يَشتَهونَ

And the meat of birds that they crave.

وَحورٌ عينٌ

And beautiful companions.

كَأَمثالِ اللُّؤلُؤِ المَكنونِ

Resembling pristine pearls.

جَزاءً بِما كانوا يَعمَلونَ

As a recompense for what they used to do.

لا يَسمَعونَ فيها لَغوًا وَلا تَأثيمًا

There, they will hear no idle or sinful speech.

إِلّا قيلًا سَلامًا سَلامًا

Only the words: “Peace, Peace.”

وَأَصحابُ اليَمينِ ما أَصحابُ اليَمينِ

And those on the Right—what of those on the Right?

في سِدرٍ مَخضودٍ

Amidst lush gardens.

وَطَلحٍ مَنضودٍ

And blooming, fragrant flowers.

وَظِلٍّ مَمدودٍ

Under vast, plentiful shades.

وَماءٍ مَسكوبٍ

With abundant poured out water.

وَفاكِهَةٍ كَثيرَةٍ

And an abundance of fruit.

لا مَقطوعَةٍ وَلا مَمنوعَةٍ

Unending and unrestricted.

وَفُرُشٍ مَرفوعَةٍ

And elevated mattresses.

إِنّا أَنشَأناهُنَّ إِنشاءً

We created them uniquely.

فَجَعَلناهُنَّ أَبكارًا

And made them virginal and pure.

عُرُبًا أَترابًا

Loving and of equal age.

لِأَصحابِ اليَمينِ

For those on the Right.

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الأَوَّلينَ

A multitude from the earliest generations.

وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الآخِرينَ

And a multitude from the later ones.

وَأَصحابُ الشِّمالِ ما أَصحابُ الشِّمالِ

And those on the Left—what of those on the Left?

في سَمومٍ وَحَميمٍ

In scorching winds and scalding water.

وَظِلٍّ مِن يَحمومٍ

Under the shadow of dense, black smoke.

لا بارِدٍ وَلا كَريمٍ

Neither cool nor refreshing.

إِنَّهُم كانوا قَبلَ ذٰلِكَ مُترَفينَ

They were indulged in luxury before that.

وَكانوا يُصِرّونَ عَلَى الحِنثِ العَظيمِ

And they persisted in immense wrongdoing.

وَكانوا يَقولونَ أَئِذا مِتنا وَكُنّا تُرابًا وَعِظامًا أَإِنّا لَمَبعوثونَ

And they used to say, “After we die and become dust and bones, will we be resurrected?

أَوَآباؤُنَا الأَوَّلونَ

And our ancestors as well?”

قُل إِنَّ الأَوَّلينَ وَالآخِرينَ

Say, “Certainly, the earlier and later generations.

لَمَجموعونَ إِلىٰ ميقاتِ يَومٍ مَعلومٍ

Will be gathered together for the scheduled meeting of a known day.”

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُم أَيُّهَا الضّالّونَ المُكَذِّبونَ

Then you, O misguided deniers.

لَآكِلونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِن زَقّومٍ

Will eat from the Tree of Bitterness.

فَمالِئونَ مِنهَا البُطونَ

You will fill your bellies with it.

فَشارِبونَ عَلَيهِ مِنَ الحَميمِ

Then, on top of it, you will drink boiling fluids.

فَشارِبونَ شُربَ الهيمِ

Drinking as parched camels do.

هـٰذا نُزُلُهُم يَومَ الدّينِ

This is their hospitality on the Day of Reckoning.

نَحنُ خَلَقناكُم فَلَولا تُصَدِّقونَ

We created you; if only you would believe.

أَفَرَأَيتُم ما تُمنونَ

Did you observe what you ejaculate?

أَأَنتُم تَخلُقونَهُ أَم نَحنُ الخالِقونَ

Is it you who create it, or are We the ones who create?

نَحنُ قَدَّرنا بَينَكُمُ المَوتَ وَما نَحنُ بِمَسبوقينَ

We decreed death among you, and We won’t be outdone.

عَلىٰ أَن نُبَدِّلَ أَمثالَكُم وَنُنشِئَكُم في ما لا تَعلَمونَ

In replacing you with others like you, and evolving you into forms beyond your comprehension.

وَلَقَد عَلِمتُمُ النَّشأَةَ الأولىٰ فَلَولا تَذَكَّرونَ

You are familiar with the first formation; why, then, don’t you reflect?

أَفَرَأَيتُم ما تَحرُثونَ

Did you see the crops you cultivate?

أَأَنتُم تَزرَعونَهُ أَم نَحنُ الزّارِعونَ

Is it you who make them grow, or are We the Grower?

لَو نَشاءُ لَجَعَلناهُ حُطامًا فَظَلتُم تَفَكَّهونَ

If We wished, We could turn it into dry stubble, so you would remain in wonder.

إِنّا لَمُغرَمونَ

“We are indebted.

بَل نَحنُ مَحرومونَ

We are deprived.”

أَفَرَأَيتُمُ الماءَ الَّذي تَشرَبونَ

Did you see the water that you drink?

أَأَنتُم أَنزَلتُموهُ مِنَ المُزنِ أَم نَحنُ المُنزِلونَ

Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?

لَو نَشاءُ جَعَلناهُ أُجاجًا فَلَولا تَشكُرونَ

If We willed, We could make it bitter; why, then, don’t you give thanks?

أَفَرَأَيتُمُ النّارَ الَّتي تورونَ

Did you see the fire that you kindle?

أَأَنتُم أَنشَأتُم شَجَرَتَها أَم نَحنُ المُنشِئونَ

Is it you who produce its tree, or are We the Producer?

نَحنُ جَعَلناها تَذكِرَةً وَمَتاعًا لِلمُقوينَ

We made it a reminder and a vital resource for the users.

فَسَبِّح بِاسمِ رَبِّكَ العَظيمِ

So, glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

فَلا أُقسِمُ بِمَواقِعِ النُّجومِ

I swear by the positions of the stars.

وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَو تَعلَمونَ عَظيمٌ

It is a most significant oath, if you only knew.

إِنَّهُ لَقُرآنٌ كَريمٌ

It is a noble Quran.

في كِتابٍ مَكنونٍ

In a safeguarded Book.

لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا المُطَهَّرونَ

None but the purified shall touch it.

تَنزيلٌ مِن رَبِّ العالَمينَ

A revelation from the Lord of the universes.

أَفَبِهـٰذَا الحَديثِ أَنتُم مُدهِنونَ

Do you take this message lightly?

وَتَجعَلونَ رِزقَكُم أَنَّكُم تُكَذِّبونَ

And make its denial your livelihood?

فَلَولا إِذا بَلَغَتِ الحُلقومَ

Then why, when it reaches the throat?

وَأَنتُم حينَئِذٍ تَنظُرونَ

And you are intently watching at that moment.

وَنَحنُ أَقرَبُ إِلَيهِ مِنكُم وَلـٰكِن لا تُبصِرونَ

We are closer to it than you are, yet you don’t perceive.

فَلَولا إِن كُنتُم غَيرَ مَدينينَ

If you’re not to be held accountable.

تَرجِعونَها إِن كُنتُم صادِقينَ

Then bring it back, if what you say is true.

فَأَمّا إِن كانَ مِنَ المُقَرَّبينَ

And if he was of those brought near.

فَرَوحٌ وَرَيحانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعيمٍ

Then pleasure, fragrance, and a Garden of Delight.

وَأَمّا إِن كانَ مِن أَصحابِ اليَمينِ

And if he is among those of the Right.

فَسَلامٌ لَكَ مِن أَصحابِ اليَمينِ

Then, “Peace to you,” from those of the Right.

وَأَمّا إِن كانَ مِنَ المُكَذِّبينَ الضّالّينَ

And if he is among the deniers, the misguided.

فَنُزُلٌ مِن حَميمٍ

Then hospitality of scalding water.

وَتَصلِيَةُ جَحيمٍ

And immersion in a Blaze.

إِنَّ هـٰذا لَهُوَ حَقُّ اليَقينِ

This is the absolute truth.

فَسَبِّح بِاسمِ رَبِّكَ العَظيمِ

So, glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.
