Surah Al-Ma'arij - The Ascending Stairways

المعارج
Verse 1

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ سَأَلَ سائِلٌ بِعَذابٍ واقِعٍ

A questioner asked for a punishment bound to happen.

Verse 2

لِلكافِرينَ لَيسَ لَهُ دافِعٌ

For the unbelievers, there is none to avert it.

Verse 3

مِنَ اللَّهِ ذِي المَعارِجِ

From God, the Lord of the ascending pathways.

Verse 4

تَعرُجُ المَلائِكَةُ وَالرّوحُ إِلَيهِ في يَومٍ كانَ مِقدارُهُ خَمسينَ أَلفَ سَنَةٍ

The angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him, on a Day that spans fifty thousand years.

Verse 5

فَاصبِر صَبرًا جَميلًا

So, be patient with a beautiful patience.

Verse 6

إِنَّهُم يَرَونَهُ بَعيدًا

They perceive it as far off.

Verse 7

وَنَراهُ قَريبًا

But We see it as near.

Verse 8

يَومَ تَكونُ السَّماءُ كَالمُهلِ

On that Day, the sky will resemble molten copper.

Verse 9

وَتَكونُ الجِبالُ كَالعِهنِ

And the mountains will appear like tufts of wool.

Verse 10

وَلا يَسأَلُ حَميمٌ حَميمًا

No friend will ask of a friend.

Verse 11

يُبَصَّرونَهُم ۚ يَوَدُّ المُجرِمُ لَو يَفتَدي مِن عَذابِ يَومِئِذٍ بِبَنيهِ

Although they will be shown to each other, the criminal would wish to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by offering his children.

Verse 12

وَصاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخيهِ

And his girlfriend and his brother.

Verse 13

وَفَصيلَتِهِ الَّتي تُؤويهِ

And his family that sheltered him.

Verse 14

وَمَن فِي الأَرضِ جَميعًا ثُمَّ يُنجيهِ

And all the people on earth, if it would only save him.

Verse 15

كَلّا ۖ إِنَّها لَظىٰ

No indeed! It is a blazing flame.

Verse 16

نَزّاعَةً لِلشَّوىٰ

Stripping away the scalps.

Verse 17

تَدعو مَن أَدبَرَ وَتَوَلّىٰ

Calling those who turned their backs and fled.

Verse 18

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوعىٰ

And hoarded and stored away.

Verse 19

إِنَّ الإِنسانَ خُلِقَ هَلوعًا

Man was created anxious.

Verse 20

إِذا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزوعًا

Agitated when misfortune touches him.

Verse 21

وَإِذا مَسَّهُ الخَيرُ مَنوعًا

And tight-fisted when good reaches him.

Verse 22

إِلَّا المُصَلّينَ

Except for those who pray.

Verse 23

الَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم دائِمونَ

Who remain constant in their prayers.

Verse 24

وَالَّذينَ في أَموالِهِم حَقٌّ مَعلومٌ

And in whose wealth is a known right.

Verse 25

لِلسّائِلِ وَالمَحرومِ

For the asker and the deprived.

Verse 26

وَالَّذينَ يُصَدِّقونَ بِيَومِ الدّينِ

And those who affirm the Day of Judgment.

Verse 27

وَالَّذينَ هُم مِن عَذابِ رَبِّهِم مُشفِقونَ

And those who fear their Lord’s punishment.

Verse 28

إِنَّ عَذابَ رَبِّهِم غَيرُ مَأمونٍ

Their Lord’s punishment isn’t to be underestimated.

Verse 29

وَالَّذينَ هُم لِفُروجِهِم حافِظونَ

And those who guard their purity.

Verse 30

إِلّا عَلىٰ أَزواجِهِم أَو ما مَلَكَت أَيمانُهُم فَإِنَّهُم غَيرُ مَلومينَ

Except for their spouses and those they rightfully possess, for then they are not to be blamed.

Verse 31

فَمَنِ ابتَغىٰ وَراءَ ذٰلِكَ فَأُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ العادونَ

But those who seek anything beyond that are the trespassers.

Verse 32

وَالَّذينَ هُم لِأَماناتِهِم وَعَهدِهِم راعونَ

And those who keep to their trusts and promises.

Verse 33

وَالَّذينَ هُم بِشَهاداتِهِم قائِمونَ

And those who stand by their testimonies.

Verse 34

وَالَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم يُحافِظونَ

And those who are diligent in their prayers.

Verse 35

أُولـٰئِكَ في جَنّاتٍ مُكرَمونَ

These will be in Gardens, honored.

Verse 36

فَمالِ الَّذينَ كَفَروا قِبَلَكَ مُهطِعينَ

So, why do these unbelievers rush headlong towards you, from every direction?

Verse 37

عَنِ اليَمينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمالِ عِزينَ

From the right and from the left, in droves?

Verse 38

أَيَطمَعُ كُلُّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم أَن يُدخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعيمٍ

Does each one of them aspire to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss?

Verse 39

كَلّا ۖ إِنّا خَلَقناهُم مِمّا يَعلَمونَ

No indeed! We created them from what they know.

Verse 40

فَلا أُقسِمُ بِرَبِّ المَشارِقِ وَالمَغارِبِ إِنّا لَقادِرونَ

By the Lord of the sunrises and the sunsets, We are Able.

Verse 41

عَلىٰ أَن نُبَدِّلَ خَيرًا مِنهُم وَما نَحنُ بِمَسبوقينَ

To replace them with others better than them. We are not overtaken.

Verse 42

فَذَرهُم يَخوضوا وَيَلعَبوا حَتّىٰ يُلاقوا يَومَهُمُ الَّذي يوعَدونَ

So, let them indulge and play until they encounter their promised Day.

Verse 43

يَومَ يَخرُجونَ مِنَ الأَجداثِ سِراعًا كَأَنَّهُم إِلىٰ نُصُبٍ يوفِضونَ

The Day they will rush out from the graves, as if they were racing towards a goal post.

Verse 44

خاشِعَةً أَبصارُهُم تَرهَقُهُم ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذٰلِكَ اليَومُ الَّذي كانوا يوعَدونَ

Their eyes will be humbled, humiliation will overshadow them. This is the Day they were promised.
