Surah Abasa - He Frowned

Chapter 80Meccan42 verses
عبس
Verse 1

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّىٰ

He frowned and turned away.

Verse 2

أَن جاءَهُ الأَعمىٰ

Because the blind man approached him.

Verse 3

وَما يُدريكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكّىٰ

And how could you possibly know? Maybe he would purify himself.

Verse 4

أَو يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكرىٰ

Or he might be reminded, and the reminder would benefit him.

Verse 5

أَمّا مَنِ استَغنىٰ

Yet, as for the one who is indifferent.

Verse 6

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدّىٰ

You devoted your full attention.

Verse 7

وَما عَلَيكَ أَلّا يَزَّكّىٰ

Even though you bear no responsibility if he fails to achieve purification.

Verse 8

وَأَمّا مَن جاءَكَ يَسعىٰ

But as for the one who came to you striving earnestly.

Verse 9

وَهُوَ يَخشىٰ

Brimming with awe and humility.

Verse 10

فَأَنتَ عَنهُ تَلَهّىٰ

You were neglectful of him.

Verse 11

كَلّا إِنَّها تَذكِرَةٌ

No. This is a reminder.

Verse 12

فَمَن شاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

So, let whoever wills, take it to heart.

Verse 13

في صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍ

On esteemed pages.

Verse 14

مَرفوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍ

Exalted and sanctified.

Verse 15

بِأَيدي سَفَرَةٍ

By the hands of scribes.

Verse 16

كِرامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

Noble and virtuous.

Verse 17

قُتِلَ الإِنسانُ ما أَكفَرَهُ

Perish man! How ungrateful he is!

Verse 18

مِن أَيِّ شَيءٍ خَلَقَهُ

From what did He create him?

Verse 19

مِن نُطفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

From a drop, He created him, and then proportioned him.

Verse 20

ثُمَّ السَّبيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

Then He smoothed the path for him.

Verse 21

ثُمَّ أَماتَهُ فَأَقبَرَهُ

Then He causes him to die, and then He buries him.

Verse 22

ثُمَّ إِذا شاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

Then, at His will, He will resurrect him.

Verse 23

كَلّا لَمّا يَقضِ ما أَمَرَهُ

Yet, he didn’t fulfill what He commanded him.

Verse 24

فَليَنظُرِ الإِنسانُ إِلىٰ طَعامِهِ

Let man contemplate his food.

Verse 25

أَنّا صَبَبنَا الماءَ صَبًّا

How We pour down rain in torrents.

Verse 26

ثُمَّ شَقَقنَا الأَرضَ شَقًّا

Then, We burst the earth in clefts.

Verse 27

فَأَنبَتنا فيها حَبًّا

And cause diverse grains to sprout.

Verse 28

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضبًا

And grapes and vegetables.

Verse 29

وَزَيتونًا وَنَخلًا

And olives and dates.

Verse 30

وَحَدائِقَ غُلبًا

And lush gardens.

Verse 31

وَفاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

And fruits and pastures.

Verse 32

مَتاعًا لَكُم وَلِأَنعامِكُم

For you and your livestock to enjoy.

Verse 33

فَإِذا جاءَتِ الصّاخَّةُ

Then, when the Shattering Blast comes.

Verse 34

يَومَ يَفِرُّ المَرءُ مِن أَخيهِ

On that Day, a person will flee from his brother.

Verse 35

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبيهِ

And from his mother and father.

Verse 36

وَصاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنيهِ

And from his girlfriend and his children.

Verse 37

لِكُلِّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم يَومَئِذٍ شَأنٌ يُغنيهِ

Each one of them, on that day, will have enough preoccupations of his own.

Verse 38

وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ مُسفِرَةٌ

Faces on that Day will be bright.

Verse 39

ضاحِكَةٌ مُستَبشِرَةٌ

Laughing, rejoicing.

Verse 40

وَوُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ عَلَيها غَبَرَةٌ

Other faces, on that day, will have upon them dust.

Verse 41

تَرهَقُها قَتَرَةٌ

Darkness will cover them.

Verse 42

أُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ الكَفَرَةُ الفَجَرَةُ

These are the unbelievers, the wicked.
